Suzy, my 7 year old APBT, is certified as a CGC (Canine Good Citizen). She is a gentle, loving and model canine companion. The focus needs to be on irresponsible dog ownership, not blind discrimination by breed.
Many people have no facts when disscusing pit bull/bully breeds. Many see a neighbor who does not treat there bully breed correctly(chained up,outside 24 and 7, no obedience,no outside life other than that yard, etc). An think all are horrbile they don't realize that the dog they see has no manners was never loved properly, and they never see that there is a human making the dog this way.Pitbull is also slang used in discribing any dog that has blocky head and crooped ears. The American Pitbull Terrier which is registered UKC has many owners who are responsible, loving, caring ,treat there dogs as family memebers, compete in conformation, obedience, fly ball, therphy, and have as lifetime buddies. These are expamples of what the dogs are really like. Look around they have many breeds when untrained are risk of biting, acting in bad ways, cannot be around people not just one breed. THEY All have onething in common an OWNER. Do not punish a breed for human errorYou also must see that owners are the ones who make the choice NOT to go to obedience, handling classes, socilization groups NOT THE DOG.. Open your eyes even if you dont like pitbull dogs, bully breeds etc.. you must see that the owner is the one that starts a dog on a down hill path.Banning ANY BREED does not help it only allows that BAD person to buy another breed. Before you hate the pitbull breed open your eyes they have many pitbull dogs that make excellent pets, they are trainable, loving, caring BUT you must look at who rasied, breed, cares for those dogs IT IS GOOD owners. Dont compare eveyone to the backyard breeders who produce dogs with problems who dont tempermant test, health test, rasie the dogs in a loving enviroment.Pitbulls are very good dogs. Learn the facts BUT remeber EVEY BAD DOG HAS A HUMAN THAT OWNS THEM so dont just point a finger at one breed look at the whole picture.
I HAVE A 3 YEAR OLD RED NOSE PITBULL AND SHE IS THE SWEETEST DOG EVER. IT IS ALL ON HOW YOU RAISE THEM, AND NEW YORK OR ANYWHERE FOR THAT MATTER SHOULD NOT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST THIS ONE BREED. I LOVE MY DOG MORE THEN ANYTHING!
If you raise any dog to be aggresive it will be. So, don't just put it on pitbulls that are agressive I've seen agressive Pugs,Hound dogs, collies, golden ritrivers and many other dogs.
Please lets get the truth out about Pitbulls. There has been so much bad press, these wonderful dogs need the public to see them for what they are. These are great dogs and shame on the people that have tried to ruin them.
I have had Pit Bulls for the last 25 years and they are the most wonderful, intelligent, sweet, loyal, funny, amazing breed. I will never live without one in my life. Thanks.
There are two sides to every story. The media needs to remember that. There are more good Pits with resposible owners, you just never hear about them. All you hear about is the bad. This only adds fuel to the fire. Much of the bad press comes because someone gets a Pit so they can have a mean old nasty guard dog. The dur pusher use them to fight & to guard their stash. That is all the news reports on. As their reputation as a vicious dog increases it only increases the desire of the wrong kind of people to own one. And that's when it all goes bad. I have enjoyed the company of some of the nicest Pit bulls you'd ever want to meet. This issue is causing horrible * unfair problems for the people who admire the breed for what it really is. A smart & loving companion. Those who show American Staffs have problems going to show their dogs because of vicious dog litigations. They have to pay the price. Dogs, like people refect the enviroment they were raised in. And even with a bad enviroment there are still those remakable souls that will give you nothing but love.
The continuing use of the word "pitbull" as a teaser merely serves to increase the suffering of shelter animals. It is through the media-driven hysteria that more innocent animals are considered unadoptable because of their breed, and must languish in shelters and inevitably be euthantized. Shame on the media for its insensitive sensationalism that causes suffering.
for all pitbull lovers here in the philippines, we consider the APBT as the ultimate dog of all.I have owned several breeds in the past but i see the pitbull as the sweetest and have the best temperament of all the breeds.
As a Sociologist I am well aware that socialization has a great impact on behavior and similar to human beings pitbulls are also largely a product of their environment. Thus, it is up to us to make sure that those environments are loving and not destructive!
I rescued a pit bill mix this summer -- I have never known a sweeter dog. Even when in great pain, he never bit or snapped. He ignores cats and loves all other dogs. He found a great forever home because of his personality -- great folks not afraid of the "pit bull stigma". I have known 4 other pit bulls and all of them were wonderful companions. Only bad guardians make bad dogs.
Please look at some past owners of this wonderful breed, you will see that Helen Kellers companion dog was a pitbull terrier. Also the "Hero Dog" and poster dog of WW11 was very loyal, people loving breed.
We have American Staffordshire Terriers. www.Infinitykennels.net I would'nt trade this breed for anything. It's all in how you raise the dog. Not everyone should be allow to own one of these dogs.
I have six personal pit bull and they are best. I have owned other breeds of dogs but pits are my favorite due to their love of humans, clowns, and fantastic at agility.
Having worked as a dog professional (kennel manager, trainer) I have been bitten/attacked by many toy breeds, but I have never had a problem with the pit breeds- with proper handling and socialization (which goes for ALL breeds) they make happy, loving, loyal pets.I own two pit mixes myself.
I'm an active volunteer at our local humane society. Some of the sweetest dogs are Pits. Any animal, regardless of gender or breed...including the human race can be mean...if conditioned to do so. "Judge the deed, not the breed"
My very first dog was a pit bull. We had Trapper from the time I was born until I was 10 years old. He was the kindest, gentlest dog I have ever had because that is the way my father trained him to be.
this subject has been swept under the rug for too long with the ridiculous excuse that all pit breeds are "just plain dangerous". the time is long overdue for the media to actually address this issue approriately and show the world that this is a subject worthy of people's time, attention and energy. if it's never dealt with properly, how can anyone expect lasting, positive results?
I have the sweetest female pit, she loves everything and is great with children! Stop all the negative press on these wonderful dogs, Its the stupid owners who teach them to be aggressive..they are the ones that should be banned.
As a matter of fact, I just got a male pit and he is also sweet as pie.
Having owned various breeds of dogs I can say the American Staffordshire Terriers I own are the best . I groomed dogs for 20 years and NEVER ONCE had any trouble with a pit-bull. Got bitten by everything else though...BAD OWNERS MAKE A BAD NAME FOR THESE DOGS...BLAME THE OWNERS, NOT THE BREED...
dont blame the breed.. i challenge does who havnt tried to owe a pit.. lets see how these dog will give you the seetest atention they can give you, just compare the sweetness of a pitbull to ather breeds.. peace!
I personally have 3 pit bulls and they are beyond the sweetest best tempermented dogs that I have. Please look at all the familys with loving friendly pet pit bulls.
Some of the sweetest, most loving dogs I've known have been pit bulls - attracting the adoration of cat lovers and greyhound owners alike. Although Pit Bulls have been subject to breeding russian roulette at the hands of sociopathic individuals does not make the breed sociopathic. The dogs need to be taken in by loving, responsible pet owners to get them out of the hands of pit fighters and breeders. Banning them from legitimate ownership and residences does NOTHING to solve the problem of the black market or reckless ownership of pitbulls!
pitbulls are very intelligent dogs that only act in the manner in wich they are raised. Family dogs that are good with children and others as long as you ont raise them to fight. The smartest breed of dog in my opinion.
I live between a pitbull and a spaniel mix. The pit bull is the sweetest dog I've ever met, and will cuddle with my kitten and clean her. The spaniel terrorizes the neighborhood-attacking kids, dogs, chasing cars. Because of the media hype, delivery truckcs won't stop at the house with the pit bull--boy are they surprised when the go to the other house. Blame the owners-NOT the breed!
why don't find the highesat race of humans that are commiting criminal act's and band them they won't because its crazy. why would we do this to so many great dogs. and were are the statitcs about german shepards and rotties why are pit bulls singled out this is insane
It is vitally important that the public become aware that the nature of pit bull is NOT and ALWAYS what we hear about on the news. As we all know, the news reports usually only the "bad" news. Ditto for the other breeds like Rotties and Shepherds etc.. It is all in the manner of how you train/raise them..kinda like kids. So it would be a welcomed change to see the other side of the story!! Please consider it!! All the pits say thank you!!
I have one rescued pitbull and she is the most amazing dog I've ever had. A wonderful personality and a true clown. At the heart of the "dangerous dog" issue is the owner. They are the ones responsible. Also, dog aggression and human aggression are completely unrelated issues and that needs to be explained to people who don't know that.
I have an Am staff of my own! And I run a shelter that is full of them and I get plenty of tongue baths every day!! They are the people oriented dogs that I know! They are all so eager to please which makes them easy targets for people who want use them the wrong way. Check some very old post cards from back when people were immigrating to the United States, you won't find any labs or cocker spaniel there, people had staffordshire terriers! They knew a great family dog when they saw one! Perhaphs we should follow their lead!
I have been grooming dogs for 10 years in a big city. We see all breeds. I've never had a Pitbull try to bite me. It's mostly breeds like ShihTzu's & Lhasa's.
A segment on the truth about pit bulls would certainly be newsworthy and different. I challenge anyone to show me a pit bull that is aggressive and unruly who has a loving, nurturing home and that was raised properly by people who care... good luck!
My husband and I have changed the minds of many people with the pit-dal mix we had and the purebred deaf pit we now have. I believe the intelligence, love and companionship is unsurpassed by any other breed. We have two other non-pit mixes in our household also and they all play, eat and sleep together. They also clean each other like little monkeys in the jungle. Too funny.
am an animal cruelty investigator
bought a log cabin in the woods where pit bull fighting was going on was horrible and tragic after i bought the house the owners are now being investigated. little did they know who just happened to look at their house on the market. i had never owned a pit but now i have one that is living a good life as opposed to the awful fighting that went on here and she is a fabulous dog. even RUNS from other dogs since she was found in a dump with her legs ducttaped together.
Pitbulls are just like any other breed of dogs. what is hurting them are the bad publicity. if the truth about this breed would be shown, then this breed will be treated fairly
Pit-bull terriers are dogs like any other. They are abused by people. The people who torture and abuse the puppies and dogs, need to be tortured and abused for their crimes. This is a case of blaming the victims, the dogs are the victims, and they are some of the sweetest dogs I've ever known. These dogs need protection. Pits are an abused breed. Let's rescue them and protect them, not hurt them. -Sue Darnell
I don't know if normally I'd turn to FOX for exposing the truth on an issue, but I agree that revealing the truth about pit bulls is important. they're wonderful dogs.
Nearly every single incident of an attack by ANY breed can be traced back to irresponsible owners. Statistics show that the Pit Bull Terrier is NOT the prime offender in dog bites or attacks. It is time we focus on the true criminals...HUMANS.
Having a dog rescue, I come across all sizes, breeds and temperment. As with any breed dog...it has to do with owner and training and educating the public. You can take the smallest breed and make it mean and nasty and very agressive. I myself love rottweilers but when I tell someone that, they back away. Same with pits. I've meet many very sweet and loving pits...and many mean and biting chi's. Fox is known as being the number one news source in this country..one that is fair and gives the truth. Please consider giving people the truth about pits...It's not the dog at fault...it's the owners. Thank you for your time.
Like any other creature, pits can certainly be loving and gentle, unless forced or trained otherwise. My five nieces and nephews, now in their mid-20's, grew up with pit bulls of all sizes and temperments, with never an incident.
We have an aggressive human society and that is the problem. We have aggressive people that try to make dogs aggressive, kids aggressive, and drive aggressively. If a drunk drive hit me while driving a Chevy Suburban, would I blame the Chevy Corporation or the drunk driver? This analogy is true for any breed of dogs. My dog is not aggressive as I have worked with and responsibly manage my dog. However any dog in the wrong hands is likely to do irresponsible things.
