Paper bags biodegrade, and it is true that plastic can pose a threat to wildlife, so then wouldn’t paper logically be the more environmentally sound choice? Actually, no. Paper only biodegrades when it is exposed to air, most of our garbage is buried in dry landfills. Newspapers as old as 50 years can be dug up and are still perfectly readable! It is not the plastic bags themselves that pose a threat to wildlife. People leave crumbs inside of them that attract animals, and people fail to dispose of them properly. It is through human error that plastic bags even reach wild animals.
There is also the issue of pollution. Huge amounts of energy are used in both the manufacture and recycling of paper and plastic bags. Obviously, paper bags are much bigger than plastic bags. To manufacture a paper bag releases 70% more atmospheric emissions and 94% more waterborne wastes. So many toxins in the air and water are more dangerous to human and animal life than plastic bags ever could be.
Another important factor to be considered when making a decision is cost. The majority of the cost from making a paper or plastic bag comes not from the material, but from the energy used to create it. To create a paper bag takes nearly 4 times as much energy as making a plastic bag. Obviously to pay for the energy used in making paper bags, grocery stores must raise their prices.
The final reason that plastic bags are far superior to paper is that plastic bags are fun and much more useful. When I was younger, I loved to make kites out of plastic bags. I owe many afternoons of fun to the this simple, inexpensive toy. Plastic bags can be much more than toys, however, they can be reused countless ways. Among these, covering water spouts during the winter, carrying muddy shoes and packing a lunch.
Despite the obvious superiority of the plastic bag, grocery stores still carry paper. Why should the environment suffer when there is an environmentally conscious, cheap and useful alternative?

This is a great argument and i think its great that you want to help but plastic bags are just as unsafe has paper CLOTH bags are safe once you have them you dont have to throw them away or anything and they are re-usable! I watched a video in my Science class its old and cheesy but its smart. Im really sorry but i appretiate all the time and effert you put into starting this petition. I really do. -Emmy Jo

I hope you realize that you are promoting the degrradation of the earth right now by even mentioning how "amazing" plastic bags are. First of all, I am doing a project right now about how harmful plastic bags are to the enviornment. They can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade in a landfill despite them being labeled as biodegradable. Plastic Bags don't even actually biodegrade in an enviornmentally safe way. They jsut break down into smaller and smaller toxic particles and seep into streams and pollute the air and earth. If you want to play with plastic bags, then use one from the packaging of a new toy or soemthing like that but have you ever realized that in South Africa the plastic bags are such a widespread problem that south africans have nicknamed the plastic bag their national flower? Also, when you mentioned how the animals are going after plastic bags becuase of waste left in them, you are jsut demonstrating your lack of research or common sense. Look at some pictures online of plastic bags in the ocean for example. I thought one was a jellyfish, another a fish. Animals have the same perception and thousands die each year because they choke or suffocate on the bags they try to consume. I was disapointed by your enviornmental apathy. I hope that you will try to research adn get your facts straight. Honestly, I believe the best option is to bring your own bag that you can reuse for groceries. There are plenty of plastic bags around the world for the children and millions of other options for a plastic bag.

Well, you just confused me. I no longer know where I stand on this issue. I'm going to have to look more into it before I can decide is I support this or not.

Good arguments, but there are a few problems. What do YOU suggest we do about all the plastic bags that are all over the place? It's not like we can force everyone to recycle, and otherwise, the plastic bags are as bad as the paper ones. Anyway, trees are starting to disapere at an enormous rate. Using only plastic bags would help protect the larger forests, though it would raise the price people pay to buy wood for their houses/beds/desks, simply because the wood harvesting people aren't selling as much, and have to raise their prices to make a profit.

UH, I think you are mixed up, it should be ban those fricken' PLASTIC BAGS! They tear easy and are lame, but also when you see trash in any lot, 70% of it or something is the damn little plastic bags. They are so LIGHT and they fly in the breeze and land in trees and catch in bushes and weeds and so on. Many countries are having limits on them or total BANS. Let's follow suit and get rid of them. I admit they seemed neato at first, and I used them for small trash can liners, but the good outweighs the bad and they have to go. Okay, so they make it easier to haul several bags of groceries than paper, but F. them anyway.
