Goal Progress:
We, the undersinged, are saddened by the current situation of teen pregnancy in Texas. Texas is the leader in the nation for teenage pregnancy, and has over 80,000 unintended pregnancies a year. Over 80% of teenage pregnancies are unintended. We feel it is a tradgety that generations of youth have grown up believing condoms are ineffective when preventing pregnancy, and that they cannot help stop the spread of STI's and HIV.
We are ashamed to have allowed our young people to learn medically inaccurate information. This information has thus placed young men and especially our women at an educational disadvantage should in the likely event they engage in any sexual activity. Sex has been displayed so negatively that we have shamed and educational discourse from taking place amongst our young people. The Real Education About Life act (REAL Act) would give everyone the proper educational tools they need to make responsible decisions about sex should they engage in it before marriage.
Young people should not be blamed for making irresponsible sexual decisions, such as not using a condom properly, if they were never taught how. Women should not be cast in shame if they are pregnant because they weren't ever told about the wide variety of birth control options available. The REAL Act would provide information about abstinence as being the only 100% effective way to protect against STI's and pregnancy, but would also include comprehensive sex education for those who will make their own choices about life. Everyone has the right to access information that will help them make better choices when it comes to life, that includes sex. Th Real Act would insure information is age-apropriate to those recieving the instruction. The Real Act is what we believe Texas needs in order to stave off these heartbreaking statistics.
Educators must be allowed and encouraged to present programs that are based on effective, science-driven information, respect the diversity of values and beliefs represented in the community and complement the education children receive from their families.
While there are three separate federal funding streams dedicated to abstinence-only-until-marriage pro¬grams, no federal funding currently exists specifically for comprehensive sexuality education.
We support The REAL Act (Bill # HR 1653 and S 972 )
