On May 16th, 2009, a really close friend of mine was killed on the streets of Sabal Palm Housing Project. The saddest part of his gruesome murder, aside from the fact that the murderer has not been found, is the fact that it was accepted as a normal occurrence in Fort Myers. Several months ago, two former high school classmates of mines were gunned down at a party in Fort Myers. When the story ran in the next day’s News Press, the community came out in droves with their comments. However, the comments that were being written were negative. They made fun of the guys. Said things such as: “I wonder how many Malt 40s were at this party” and “Scum is taking care of the Scum of Fort Myers”. These comments left me nauseous.
These are people, ladies and Gentlemen. They are brothers, husbands, fathers, and sons. These people are not “scum” as you put it. What makes your life more valuable then another? Because you went to college? Because you have a little more cash in your pockets? We are all God’s children. No matter our faults and our mistakes.
Now is the time to stop watching our love ones die in these streets. Its time we rise up and hold the leaders of this community accountable to their promises and roles.
It’s time to demand answers. It’s time to call upon the leaders of this community for a town meeting. And to provide us with the information on how exactly they plan to change this community around. How will they make our streets safer? How are they planning to rid the community of its murderers who are carrying on in this town as if it’s the Wild Wild West?
Our children are growing up in the streets. Is this really what we want for them? What will it take for you to scream ENOUGH!
Well, I’m at that point and I demand some answers. I demand that ALL crimes be investigated EQUALLY in Lee County, regardless of your skin color, your address, or your criminal record. I demand peace in our streets. And I demand that ALL lives be valued. Join me in my fight for Justice For ALL.
