Governor Patterson recently announced the Deficit Reduction Proposal, which includes a 10% across the board cut in Local Assistance funding. Unfortunately, this funding cut would directly affect people who need services the most but frequently have the least capability to advocate for themselves- the developmentally disabled.

Nearly every agency which provides services for the developmentally disabled population relies on government funding – cutting this assistance by 10% would be literally devastating to agencies like mine, the PutnamARC. Both the staff and the participants from our organizations will suffer tremendous cut backs and a decline in their quality of services if this proposal passes. Here is a direct quote from the NY Governor’s website:

“Specific 2009-10 programmatic impacts as part of this $1.3 billion across-the-board local assistance reduction include the following: a $480 million state fiscal year cut to school districts ($686 million on a 2009-10 school-year basis); a $287 million cut to Medicaid; a $184 million cut to other health and mental hygiene programs; a $28 million cut to social service programs; a $67 million cut to Aid and Incentives to Municipalities; a $125 million cut to transportation programs; a $62 million cut to higher education programs; as well as other reductions.”

As you can clearly see, education, health and mental services are taking a bulk of these cuts! While we all understand that times are tough and there are serious financial difficulties in our state, there must be a better way to reduce the deficit than taking money out of the hands of those who need it the most.

Please help me spread the word and tell Governor Patterson and the rest of NY’s Government not to cut our funding!

These cuts will dramatically change the way services are provided to the most vulnerable population in our State! Do not cut services to people with Developmental disabilities!
