Dear Mr. Stewart:

Last week the list of 2008 inductees into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame were announced. As is years past, interested people from around the world spent time debating the selection committee’s choices. Inductees such as John Mellencamp, The Dave Clark 5, and Leonard Cohn are all worth debate as to whether they should be inducted into the Rock Hall, however there is zero debate regarding whether those artists count as “Rock N Roll” Artists.

It is quite conceivable that when asked what the definition of Rock N Roll is, ten people would have ten completely different answers. However, If the same ten people were asked if one of the 2008 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Madonna, was in the definition of Rock N Roll, those then people would give a unified “NO.”

Regardless of personal taste, Madonna is a valid artist, a huge influence in Popular Cultural (worldwide), and will be written about in history books in years to come. Contradictory, Madonna’s music has never been defined as Rock N Roll and will never be. The Kingston Trio and The Beastie Boys music is more Rock N Roll. Peter, Paul, and Mary contributed more to Rock N Roll music (simply the music) than Madonna.

With the definition of Rock N Roll being vague and indescribable; along with popular music becoming more of a conglomeration of various music styling and genres; the issue of a “non Rock N Roll artist” being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame will become more prevalent in the future. We, the undersigned would like to do more than debate the validity of Madonna or any future artist’s induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame…Therefore we propose that The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame change it’s name to the “Popular Contemporary Western Music Hall of Fame” including Urban music, Country and Western music, Rock N Roll, Heavy Metal, Reggae, Jazz, Blues, and other important cultural and musical talents.
