PETITION FOR A HEALTHY, SAFE, LEGAL HASLETT, MI SCHOOL CLIMATE
BACKGROUND
Educating staff, schools, students, and communities about tolerance and about hate and bias can help create healthy, safe, democratic, and violence-free environments in which our children can learn and in which all in the school community can practice the mutual respect that all deserve. Any acts in which teachers, families, and student victims are harassed or targeted because of their race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, any acts designed to humiliate those who are different and to make them feel isolated, vulnerable, and unwanted, are intolerable and should not be accepted. Any acts in which victims and teachers, families, and students who support victims and condemn discrimination are silenced and marginalized by public school staff are intolerable and should not be accepted.
Students, families, and staff in the Haslett Public Schools have experienced incidents of this nature and that these incidents suggest a climate hostile to difference. We call on the Michigan Department of Education to investigate and address these issues in constructive ways and to reassure the community that shaming, hostile and hate driven actions will not occur in the district.

PETITION:
#######################################
WE, the undersigned, condemn the attacks on Haslett Public school teacher Veronica Piechotte at hands of her fellow teachers, and the subsequent lack of consequences.
WE, the undersigned, condemn Superintendent Mike Duda’ s “joke” at a staff meeting of the Haslett Public Schools: “ If you want this in another language, move to a country that speaks it.”
WE, the undersigned believe an investigation into the administrators, climate and polices of Haslett Public schools system is warranted.
WE ask the state of Michigan and the Michigan Civil Rights Commission to protect the rights of the students and staff of Haslett Public Schools according to law.
