Every year over 40 million animals are slaughtered by the fur trade. We have always known that all fur-bearing animals bred in tiny cages on fur farms or trapped in the wild suffer tremendously for the price of their fur. But it took a recent investigation to expose a dirty secret concealed by the fur trade for years: the horror of 2 million domestic cats and dogs barbarically killed every year, their fur being imported into Europe and the United States.
Britain, far from being the exception, is at the forefront of it all.

The investigation focused on China but it uncovered the extent of the link between the trade in cat and dog fur and the international fur trade. Some cats and dogs are bred on farms, but most are strays that have been abandoned or companion animals that have been stolen. Their fur is used for children's clothing, stuffed toys, fur garments including fur trim, and a number of accessories such as gloves and hats.
It has been estimated that 500,000 cats are killed from October to February. They are killed by hanging, or they are hung from a wire while water is poured down their throats through a hose, causing them to drown. Many cats are still conscious as their stomachs are cut and they are skinned alive.

Dogs suffer a similar fate. After travelling for hours with no food and water, they are tied with a tight metal wire, lifted by a hind leg and stabbed in the groin area, which causes them to howl in pain and attempt to escape in a pool of blood. This makes the metal wire cut further into the dog's neck and eventually the animal bleeds to death. No time is wasted when there is money to be made, so the dogs are often skinned alive. No attempt is made to shield the other dogs awaiting their fate from witnessing their companion's brutal slaughter.
