Save New York State Parks!
Published February 20, 2010
Dear Governor Paterson and NYS Legislators:
Please keep New York State Parks (NYS) open.
While closing of these parks may serve as an immediate source of revenue to close the NYS budget gap, the exponential effect of these closings will be felt throughout all effected communities. Not only do they, they provide affordable, close-to-home recreation for families in and out of state, they also promote tourism.
As stated in a press release by Commissioner Carol Ash on December 9, 2009, the New York State park system attracts more than 55 million visitors annually. \"Attendance during 2009 increased for the first ten months of the year to 900,000 more visitors compared to the same period last year. We expect this trend to continue next year – for example advance reservations for the 2010 camping season are on pace for another record-setting year.\"
In addition, she stated that, \"A recent study by the University of Massachusetts\' Political Economy Research Institute documented that New York\'s state park system generates $1.9 billion in economic activity every year – five times the agency\'s total annual budget – and accounts for 20,000 private sector jobs. Nearly half the economic activity is from visitors outside the immediate areas in which the parks are located.\"
In summary, closing the parks will not only affect people utilizing the parks, it will affect local businesses as well. Due to the current economic situation, the NYS park system serves as a low-cost recreational activity that can be utilized by families of all economic backgrounds. Please do not make NYS residents, out of state tourists and NYS business suffer because NYS legislature cannot balance our budget.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
People for the Parks
