Following the statement from Prime Minster Gordon Brown which apologised for the treatment of Alan Turing, we feel that a posthumous Knighthood for Turing's invaluable work and achievements is in order. Please join this group if you feel the same way, and suggest campaigns to achieve this aim. This group is open to all nationalities, but is particularly pertinent to citizens of the British Commonwealth.

Anyone can nominate a British citizen for knighthood or other royal honours. Nominations from the public account for about a quarter of all recommendations. The Prime Minister and government departments usually submit the rest of the recommendations for the biannual Honours List.

Tens of thousands of people have signed a Downing Street petition calling for a posthumous government apology to World War II code breaker Alan Turing.

Turing was the greatest computer scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing, helped break the Nazi Enigma code and told us how to tell whether a machine could think.

He was also gay. He was prosecuted for being gay.
In 1952 Turing was prosecuted under the gross indecency act after admitting to a sexual relationship with a man. Chemically castrated as a 'cure', he took his own life two years later, aged 41.

A petition was created by computer scientist John Graham-Cumming.

He was seeking an apology for the way the young mathematician was treated after his conviction. He has also written to the Queen to ask for a posthumous knighthood to be awarded to the British mathematician.

The British Government has apologized for his treatment and has recognized that his work created much of the world we live in and saved us from Nazi Germany. The apology also recognized the tragic consequences of prejudice that ended this man's life and career.

We feel a Knighthood will raise the profile of this great man and all his outstanding achievements, and give him the long overdue recognition that he deserves.

Thank you Alan Turing for your legacy and shame on the government of the United Kingdom for taking so long to set the record \'straight\'.
