Support International Competition for all Canadian Synchronized Skating Teams
Created by Karen Ballinger on 18 March 2008 @ 6:19:10 PM
The recently published “Synchronized Skating Committee Update” (March 7, 2008) states that only members of the national team will be allowed to participate in an ISU-sanctioned international competition. It is in this that we, the supplicants, believe this system favours “last year’s” teams and prevents up-and-coming teams from the benefits provided by an international technical panel and the experience needed for future international success.
In the past, non-national team members were granted permission to compete internationally, thus giving these teams an invaluable experience. In 2001, Gold Ice Junior, a first year team, received permission to compete at the senior level in The Neuchâtel Trophy, even though they were neither on the national team nor a senior level team. The following year, clearly benefitting from the opportunity they had been allowed, they placed third at Canadians, and have since medaled three times (one silver and two bronze) at The World Challenge Cup for Juniors in five years, and have twice finished forth. In addition, Ice Image Senior competed at the 2006 Czech Open, though not part of the National Team. Furthermore, in Nexxice Junior’s first year, they competed at the Spring Cup, and the knowledge gained was undoubtedly a large part of their sixth place finish at WCCJ this past season. Similarly, Gold Ice Senior (2007) and Nexxice Senior (2001) were both permitted to compete internationally in their first seasons – both teams benefitting immensely from such an opportunity. It must be acknowledged that allowing all Junior and Senior teams such an important opportunity to compete internationally will only strengthen competition in Canada, which will in turn progress the teams representing Canada to a higher level at the World level.
We, the undersigned, call for Skate Canada to promote fair competition by permitting all Junior and Senior teams the opportunity for international competition.

Let's do all we can to support amateur sport development in Canada by allowing these teams to compete openly through ISU.

Synchro needs to grow and become popular. If teams cannot go to other countries they don't know what type of competition they are against and how the judging system works in other places. It is good to get teams in an international atmosphere, it helps no what they need to do to achieve more. Skate Canada is only preventing this sport from thriving and becoming an Olympic sport , which is something much wanted in the synchronized community
