If the majority of Puerto Ricans are still uncomfortable about statehood with and/or independence from the United States, that is fine!! However, we, the American people, should no longer continue with the commonwealth status (quasi-statehood) in Puerto Rico, for it is costing us billions of dollars in taxpayers money to fund their social and economic needs while many of the people there and in the U.S. mainland are pretty thankless about it. Imagine if Philippines, a former American territory (and a former Spanish colony before that, just like Puerto Rico was as such), were not given independence and then thus eventually became one of the U.S. states, the Filipinos would create socio-economic problems for the people in the American mainland, just like many Puerto Ricans have been doing for so many years. It would be much better for the U.S. to transfer the sovereignty of Puerto Rico back to Spain, or to any one of the former Spanish colonies, such as Mexico or one of the other Latin American countries, Northern Morocco, Western Sahara or Equatorial Guinea in Africa, or Philippines in Asia. Enough is enough, the fact that many Puerto Ricans like to have it both ways, in which they do not like America for various reasons (i.e., U.S. military presence in their region, etc.) but love abusing its monetary resources, still creates a nuisance to this day. Why should we continue to put up with this??!!

Had Puerto Rico been permanently an asset (in terms of social and economic aspects, etc.) to the United States, I would have supported statehood for it. But unfortunately, many people there and many of those from there are continuing to create unnecessary troubles and/or problems both socially and economically, which at times are considered anti-American, and thus, making Puerto Rico a thorn on the side of the United States. Therefore, it would be best for Puerto Rico to be granted total independence for good under the condition just stated. After all, Americans, regardless of race and/or ethnicity, deserve better.

I live in Albany New York, which is full of Puerto Ricans moving here from NYC. They sardine in these run down homes in the downtown area and they each have five kids out of wedlock. Most of them have never been to school and speak horrid English. They also look like birds and speak so fast you can barely understand them if you speak Spanish. They are dirty and don't work but live off welfare money. They are also the reason for the booming crime rate here in Albany and the rest of New York. The only reason why they come to America is because Puerto Rico is owned by America and all Puerto Ricans are American citizens by default. Make Puerto Rico it's own country. They don't even want to be a state because they don't want to pay taxes but they want to stay a territory so they can move to America and not be stopped by Border Patrol.
