Stop Enstar's 22% Rate Increase
Published October 21, 2008
I am writing this letter on behalf of my neighbors in the East Anchorage and Muldoon area. I have been talking to many of them over the past few weeks since Enstar’s announcement of a rate increase of 22%. I wanted to convey to you their sentiments and mine on the proposed increase. I don’t understand how this adjustment can be justified.
The natural gas in Cook Inlet has been our source of energy in Anchorage for over 30 years. The cost for exploration and the pipeline that delivers it to this area should have been paid off and amortized many years ago. The cost to consumers has already gone up over 40% in the last few years. Another 22% seems very excessive to me and the citizens I have spoken with about the increase. I urge you to vote down the proposed increase by Enstar. This would enable many people who are on fixed income and who earn median wages to afford to heat their homes this coming winter.
Alaska's Constitution requires that our natural resources be use for the maximum benefit of Alaskans, and I cannot conceive how this rate hike could be construed as in the best interest of Alaskans. The proposed increase is indefensible and would hurt working and retired Alaskans.
