Firing Imus is just fanning the fires. What he said was bad but there are others who in my opinion are just as bad and worse, i.e. Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, for starters. Firing Imus just causes more divisiveness among the public which is the last thning we need at this time.

I am a woman who worked in radio back in 1979. I knew then that this raping of the Federal Communications Act would be bad for women and minorities. But never did I think it would allow these hate-mongers with a political agenda (supported by the Republican Party) to get as much attention as they have. Let's go back to fairness and decency in broadcasting. We, the people, own the airwaves. We own the devolution of our property. Let's get back to an honest conversation on the airwaves of our democracy -- not this hijacked spew that has a secret agenda.
I agree don imus was wrong and deserved punishment but when will we do something about rush limbaugh and sean hannity and bill o'reilly all of whom constantly make disparaging remarks about everyone from blacks to gays to poor people to peace activists. the list of people they demean and insult is endless when will this stop being tolerated.

Bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Get hate speech off the airwaves, which are public and should not exclude or alienate the greater part of the population that does not agree with the hatemongers.

I cannot listen to talk radio in my town (Boston) because all talk radio (24 hours/day) is filled with commentators/radio hosts whose views truly are the views of white supremacists. Don’t take my word for it; listen to random tapes of Michael Savage for the last several years, Rush Limbaugh, and on and on. They feed their audience disinformation and violent commentary that obscures the fact that what they are stating is absolute dog poop. It’s a real shame and disgrace that in 2007 our elite (powerful) citizens as represented by the CEO’s and suits at these various media conglomerates subject this kind of trash to the general public. I’ve come to the conclusion that these same CEO’s of these giants of industry truly hate the American people.

I couldn't agree with this more: that Imus is just the tip of the iceberg and long overdue. It is a shame that NBC had not done this sooner, to all of the hatespeakers that it has cultivated. The same goes of course for the rest of the MSM.
