If a poor neighborhood didn't like all the traffic coming through its streets, would they get to reclaim a public road for private use? No, but different rules apply to rich folks.

The folks of Rob Roy (a fancy neighborhood for the super rich on the Southwest side of Austin), sick and tired of all the common folk using "their" roads, are beginning construction of a gate to deny the rest of us access to public roads.

Proponents "reject any implication that it has to do with a distaste for riff-raff".. We're not convinced.

The gate, currently under construction at Pascal and Loop 360 (also known as Capital of Texas Highway), will choke off a major arterial throughway which is used by more than 4,000 commuters daily.

This road is the only alternative route between 360 north and Bee Caves road west. In the event the intersection at Bee Caves and 360 was closed or gridlocked, tens of thousands could be cut off from their jobs or homes.

The Statesman writes:

"The county has rules for this sort of thing. Joe Gieselman, the county's transportation manager, said that, for instance, a neighborhood containing a major arterial street would not be able to just close it off willy-nilly."

But who decides if the road is a major arterial street? How about the thousands who use it every day? No. Once again it will be the privileged elite who decide.
