Allow me to give you a scenario. A young woman initially engages in sexual activity with an acquaintance. She realizes that something isn’t right once he begins to penetrate her, and she asks him to stop. When he doesn’t relinquish, she begins to scream, “No, stop, I can’t breathe.” He tells her “No, you’re going to scream my name.” Intercourse continues until the young man climaxes. Throughout the ordeal, the young woman is telling her acquaintance that she can’t breathe, NO, and that she wants him to stop. He finishes on leaving her scarred, literally. She goes to the police, who in turn let’s her know that no crime has been committed because she initially engaged in the sexual act, leaving the young woman’s life in turmoil.

So what is rape?

Rape: Sexual intercourse with a woman by a man without her consent and chiefly by force or deception.

Statutory rape: Sexual intercourse with a female who is below the statutory age of consent.

Consent: Compliance in or approval of what is done or proposed by another.

In the State of North Carolina, Statute 14-27.2. First-degree rape. Element (4).
*It is stated that “Evidence of physical resistance is not necessary to prove lack of consent (293 N.C. 559). If penetration occurs with the victim’s consent, no rape has occurred though the victim later withdraws consent during the same act of intercourse (297 N.C. 293).”

That statement leaves me to the conclusion that at any time during this period, if pain is inflicted, or if a “victim” has any reservations about the sexual encounter, he or she does not have the power to say “no, stop, I don't want to do this.” Not only is this law immoral, it is unacceptable. It was done before, and it can be done to you!! Stand up against this law. Let’s ensure that Lawmakers are NOT placing laws into existence that does not protect a woman or man from being sexually abused when they say “no!”
