Two new High Definition Formats launched in 2006. Hi Def DVD (HD DVD) launched first and had their specifications and players ready.
They have one minimum player specification which gives all owners fantastic Hi Def video, but also included advanced audio decoders like Dolby Digital+ (DD+) and TrueHD lossless audio. They also have a fully operational Interactive layer called HDi, and network ports on all players.
HD DVD has had the best available picture since the day it was launched, and continues to be held up as the best picture quality even now.
A competing format called Bluray came onto the market a few months later, developed mainly by Sony. It seems clear that it was NOT ready and has been a mess, with more bad news, it seems, everyday. The initial Bluray movies were of terrible quality, and even today, experts still give the overall picture quality crown to HD DVD.
Bluray player specifications were not ready, and a "final" (1.1) player profile was supposed to come into effect on May 31st 2007, almost a year after the launch of the format, to replace the "interim" (1.0) player "launch" profile. However, this date has now been pushed back until effectively November 1st, 2007, due to many problems they are having. In the meantime, Bluray standalone players on sale at this time will not be capable of handling some of the features of the "final" spec which may be on future discs.
HD DVD has been a better and more consistent product and has more owners of standalone players than the Bluray format, and is favoured by more users in more surveys than Bluray.
The Bluray association and Sony made a number of deals with certain studios, who agreed to only support Bluray, in order to help force the "victory" of the Bluray format, over HD DVD, in the market. It is our understanding that the EU is currently investigating these deals to see if they were anti-consumer.
Our contention is that we don't care for the "format war politics" - we (HD DVD) have more standalone players than Bluray and want support from these studios. These studios were seemingly assured by the BDA and Sony that the Bluray format would "walk" over HD DVD, but that never happened.
The HD DVD format has outsold Bluray for most of the lifetime of the two formats, and we believe that although the current sales of each are very close, that HD DVD has a large market of owners that would support more film releases.
The BDA and Sony counted heavily on the PS3 games system to create a large user base of movie buyers, but the "trojan horse" plan appears to have come in way under expectations, and an initial "curiosity" sales surge has faded, leaving HD DVD once again poised to be the dominant format.
Many studios support HD DVD already - including Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, The Weinstein Company, Studio Canal, Dreamworks, First Look Studios, The BBC, and many more.
We are asking Disney, MGM, Fox and, yes, even Sony Pictures, to reconsider their current positions, cut out the nonsense, and support this thriving HD DVD market with more movie releases.
We believe that HD DVD is the best format, with the best picture quality, the best value for consumer's dollars and a format which is fully "built", not "half-baked" and still being designed like Bluray. We feel that we have more owners of standalone players in the market and that this gap will grow even more during 2007.
Please listen to us and support HD DVD.
