The current off-leash tolerance has worked pretty well for 20 years. My friends from abroad are always amazed of how NYC dogs are well behaved. We have all learned to share the park in a peaceful, amiable way. Regression and intolerance is not the way forward.
Unleashed does not mean out of control; in fact, allowing dogs to be unleashed in an appropriate environment encourages natural social interaction. I support the right of responsible dog owners to let their dogs off-leash.
We love our dogs as much as we love our kids. They are family. Please understand that those animals need love and FREEDOM FROM THE LEASH. We need more green areas where dogs can run around and socialize with other dogs. Central Park (manhattan) is the best example. There is so much green area not used efficiently. Please let us have it and we'll make sure our dogs will behave. Get a dog and you will see how much it will mean to you.
In my experience, NYC dog owners are hugely responsible, recognizing that the opportunity for dogs to play freely at designated times is a privilege. Please let this continue.
