AMFA Asst. National Director Steve MacFarlane should resign his position immediately.
Mr. MacFarlane misled AMFA members into believing a Strike at Northwest Airlines would cripple the airline as its mechanics were not replaceable.

Mr. MacFarlane’s naivety led to a complete bust of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association at Northwest Airlines. The fact is; thousands of qualified mechanics were available due to the nationwide lay-offs of thousands of commercial aircraft mechanics post 9/11 and NWA’s successful outsourcing of aircraft maintenance to both overseas and low-rate American vendors… Outsourcing that met little or no resistance from AMFA.

Mr. MacFarlane's shortcomings began when he was President of AMFA Local 33. Mr. MacFarlane filed an ill-advised lawsuit against AMFA National when Local 33 did not get the complete Veto power over the other AMFA local he sought during the 2000 AMFA Convention. The lawsuit exposed an internal weakness to NWA, which they used to their benefit by unnecessarily dragging out negotiations for months. Mr. MacFarlane also encouraged his L33 membership to work overtime after thousands of fellow members were furloughed post 9/11. Again this caused division amongst AMFA’s locals as working overtime while fellow members are furloughed is an AMFA Constitutional violation as well as a completely unacceptable practice from any union’s standpoint.

Northwest calculated this division and used it masterfully to exploit and break AMFA at NWA.

Mr. MacFarlane oversaw the AMFA-NWA negotiations which led to the ill-advised strike… A strike which caused the complete loss of its mechanic’s jobs and a tremendous loss of vacation, severance and unemployment benefits.

Since the strikes impact has now been realized, AMFA members have received no information as to what AMFA is doing for them. Steve MacFarlane is personally responsible for AMFA current situation at NWA. If Mr. MacFarlane has any integrity, he would follow the footsteps of AMFA Region II Director/Negotiator, Jim Young, and resign immediately.
