I support this petition. Yes definitely !!! I started attending Renaissance Fairs 3 years ago and never felt so alive!; and in addition to this turning the TV off, using candles, etc. the only thing modern I use on a regular basis is the computer and even that is too much. Today many people are like robots and the noise pollution is terrible; technology is indeed evil; FYI I believe cars have killed almost as much people as guns since it's invention; it's possible!

Regardless of what Ronald Wright wrote, he's wrong. We measure our progress strongly by moral advances. Every society has looked at their precedents, and judge themselves by it. Much of the "Islamic" world judge themselves by the Islamic "Golden Age" - a moral relative judgement. The people of the Rennaisance considered themselves morally superior to the people of the Dark Ages, and democracy (which can be arguably called a technological progress) is generally considered morally superior to the lifestyle of the Mongols. Despite our current obsession with iPods, future generations won't judge us primarily on our music storage media, but on how we related to one another through it. While luxury brings with it the potential for moral stagnation (see France just before the French revolution), this has more to do with inequality. We are not depleting the world's resources whatsoever - Earth is pretty big, and humanity will destroy itself well before we chop down the last tree or eat the last lemur or extract the last drop of oil. The problem isn't with a lack of resources, but unequal and inefficent distribution of such. The answer: a more responsible application of technology, not abandonment, nor less dependancy. Abandonment also leads to stagnation - life without technology (which includes language, incidentally) would be markedly sparse, and there'd be no time for abstract concepts like "freedom", because we'd all be "enslaved" to survival.

I can't say I support this petition fully, but I can say that Western society is addicted to the luxuries that technology offer. Ronald Wright wrote that we measure our progress by technological advances, but never by moral advances. Technology on the scale that we use it is foolish. Because of our demand for better video games, ipods, and cars, we have seriously jeopordized our future. Nothing can be succesful if it is not sustainable, and as we exponentially continue to deplete and pollute the world, we only find ways to quicken our downfall. However, to communicate in today's world, we need technology like the PC I am typing on now to do things like start petitions. Rather than drop technology all together, we need to decrease our dependancy on it. We must understand that our ignorance has consequences, even if they are not obvious. So Averin Resnick, although your world makes more sense, you can't expect everyone to give up what they can't live without. And to those who haven't read Wright's work, you should. He's a lot smarter than I am.

Technology is the single most imortant aspect of human nature that seperates us from wild animals. Technology is the greatest thing ever. Anyone who opposes technology is fucking dumb. In fact, I would like to see them go a week without it. They would have to forage their own food, hunt, and if they get sick, basically they're fucked, because medecine and technology go hand in hand. The human race is also much happier with modern technology (at least the ones that have it.) Using computers to process documents and what not save millions of trees and rain forests. You are a fucking idiot to say that technology is bad.
