I think it is most certaintly not an anime (because anime means it\'s a japanese cartoon), however the animation & art is more like anime then a normal American cartoon.

Avatar is not an anime but it is better than many of the best japenese animes out there.

Unless you are talking about animated cartoons in Japanese, anime is only Japanese cartoons. Just as manhwa is Korean for comics, so unless you are speaking about comics in Korean, manhwa is a label used for Korean comics. Can you tell the difference between manhwa and anime? It is not always so clear. *Anime is not anime just because characters are drawn a certain way. Anime has Japanese culture, folklore, animation/manga aesthetics. Even the weird stuff is somewhat nostalgic to Japanese. Why? Because it is originally intended for a Japanese audience. Look at the anime Kemonozume, Mononoke, Seirei no Moribito, Paradise Kiss, and Honey and Clover and think about it. *Avatar:The Last Airbender does copy cliche anime character style, but it is an American cartoon, not an anime. It also lacks the Japanese-ness that makes anime anime. The way the story is told isn't Japanese. The way the scenes are done does not seem very anime-like. Air is considered to be an element according to Western thought, but not Eastern. A Chinese-inspired world would use proper kanji, more Chinese-sounding country titles, and there wouldn't be an air country. The clothing, architecture, scenery, and monsters/animals would be more familiar and influenced by Chinese (and maybe Japanese) folklore. It is clear that the people behind it did not do their homework. If you want an anime with a Chinese-like fantasy world, look at Juuni Kokuki, Seirei no Moribito, or Fushigi Yuugi. *So Avatar: The Last Airbender is not an anime. Avatar: The Last Airbender sucks. I only watch anime instead of American cartoons. Sometimes, I don't get people to say Avatar: The Last Airbender is the best anime there is. And I'm not saying just because I'm against their opinions. I'm saying that because they think of Avatar as an anime rather than a typical American cartoon.
