i'm no fisherman so i'm not qualified to comment, but this very much sounds and reads like short term gain for the few, long term pain for the many. Protection of fish during spawning can only help everyone intersted in the bigger picutre surely
Sport fishing and fly fishing for Bass is a growing sport that will assist toursism. It could mean huge revenues for this country if we have the good sense to preserve fish stocks. Any conservation of bass stocks is a must.
Dear Sir or Madam As a broadcaster author writer we need to protect the bass stocks. The live bass is worth considerable more than a dead one in tourism. Remember once its killed it cannot bring in more revenue. Unless the exploitation of the bass is halted I will have to encourage my reades and listeners not to visit the Channel Islands in future. Yours sincerely Martin James
It deeply saddens me that Guernsey should allow this destructive fishing, and so damage both the stocks of bass for the whole of the UK, and its image for potential visiting anglers and their families. I am far less inclined to visit Guernsey as a consequence of this destruction than I would be were there to be an enforced close season for netting.
When is the EU going to manage fishery stocks? Up to now it has fiddled while herring and cod stocks were decimated. Guernsey can do something for its own bass stocks now, so do it.
Guernsey Authorities must act now to protect Breeding Bass stocks by introducing a closed season from 1st January to 31st March. If not, Guernsey will undoubtedly lose a valuable tourism resource.
As usual, the commercial fishermen of this country, and Europe, will not be happy until they have completely eradicated all fish from our waters. The classic "I'm alright, Jack'.
I'm saddened to hear of the targetting of the breeding population.
Not very 'sustainable' and such a short term attitude.
What happens when it's all destroyed ??
Fishing on this scale in spawning grounds is absolutley ridiculous. These actions puts the future of the species in jepordy and will greatly reduce numbers in future (both of fish and visiting anglers!!).
As a 13 year old I want to be able to continue fishing when i'm older but if there are no fish to catch then I may just aswell give up now.
Give the future generation a chance please!!
I shall not be visiting Guernsey again until somehting is done about the exploitation of the bass stocks off your coast. I have visited severaltimes each year with my family for many years. I am going to Ireland instead where they recognise the value of recreational angling is over 10 times the value of the fish on a slab.
Is this another opportunity missed by grey people who do not have the common sense or guts to make what is so clearly a simple decision. not rocket science is it even politicians should be able to work out this one.
Nice and simple for the people in charge.
Kill parents = no babies = no future parents = NO BASS = damaged local economy = no votes = no job for you!
If we do not act now the Bass will go down the same road as the cod wich is dangerously low in numbers, We must stop being narrow minded and think about the future.
All species of fish have to be saved from over commercial fishing. It is obvious that the fish have to be able to spawn if there are to be fish for the future.
The spawning fish are the future of bass, why take that away for a short term commercial gain.
I was hoping to pop over for a fishing holiday in the next couple of years, this is now in doubt
