I Think it is really great to have this web page, everything deserves a chance in life. I hope it is not too late for the bass before someone makes the effort to sort this situation out.
This mass slaughter must stop now! It will effect Bass stocks in years to come, have you not learnt with the Cod or are you too greedy to really care!!
If we are to ensure a return of the days when a good days fishing meant a good days fishing then we need closed seasons nationwide not just in specific areas. Effective management is long overdue ijn our seas.
The protection of spawning bass is an essential not an option. Its about time the commercial fisherman, or those fishing for greed, realise that the long term benefits are conservation and protection. This is not to the detriment of the local fishing industry but a benefit. Read the scientific research, think about the long term benefits for everyone by preserving the stocks. Or, continue to buy into the short sighted view that fishing spawning grounds doesn't make a difference and hold your head up proud, when you bank your money in this very profitable period.
Hi, Myself and my brother have been very concerned about this continued slaughter of the breeding bass and have made numerous approaches via email and telephone calls to the sea fisheries about this. We have also contacted The Guernsey Press, Island F.M and Greenpeace, Katie Colins at ISland F.M was very interested and ran the story ad Tim Hewke from Greenpeace was also very keen and stated that they were already aware of the problem. If you would like me to forward the emails then email me at: sensible_fishing@hotmail. co.uk
Thanks
I've never fished Guernsey, but if I ever did I would like there to be fish available to catch.
Any fishing during the spawning period should be restricted.
Looking to match bass and mullet fishing in the summer with wife and three children.Significantly more expensive than 2 weeks in Spain. Closed season would seem attractive option to me!
I can't believe that nothing has been done about this yet! We all love to fish for bass but hauling them up by the ton whilst spawning is ethically wrong. this must be put to a stop asap!!
As an ecologically minding channel island spearfisherman I am disgusted that the Guernsey authorities are turning a blind eye to this. Come on Guernsey States show the world.
off course, less bass less desire to come one dau to Guernsey for fishing which does'nt mean to me to keep fish but enjoy fishing as I feel it. You catch a fish and when you release it it does not mean that you enjoyed the play but it means taht you immersed yourself in nature. You understand it, with effort. You love fish as a dog enjoys its master (who is the real master) if you do not understand me it doesn't matter as long as you feel somewhere fish is part of nature as your cliffs as much as part of me.
Decimating the bass population is typical of the short-termism practiced by Commercial Fishers. They have destroyed the Atlantic Cod stocks & will do the same to Bass, if left unchecked.
NO to this short sighted view of wild stocks management.
NO to picking-up juveniles on spawning grounds by trawling and pair trawling.
YES to a sustainable fisheries management
YES to a better recognition of recreational angling.
let us consider the bass as game , and preserve its spawning period .
A european ban on seabass fishing should be declared for january , feb and march .
Depletion of fish stocks & excessive professional fishing pressure are a well known facts, as well the predictable extinction of certain fish species in western europe seas.Short sighted politicians deliberately ignore this situation. Closed seasons & preservation of spawning grounds are necessary in Guernsey and elsewhere. Good luck - François from France
