anything to protect our fish stocks must be worth fighting for,in the river humber we have a power station slaughtering thousands of fish and shellfish each day, best of luck to you ,john atkinson.
The bass breeding stocks must be better protected, not just in Guernsey but around the whole of the U.K. Angling friends and I have visited the C.I., and Guernsey in particular, for many years and one of the main reasons for our visits is to sample the excellent bass, bream, flatfish and tope fishing. If the bass fishing deteriorates as a result of the commercial over-fishing then anglers, such as ourselves, will choose to fish elsewhere, such as Wales and Ireland and Guernsey and the other C.I. will loose a considerable amount of angling tourist revenue. Let's hope that sense prevails and the authorities will take the appropriate and necessary action to stop this potential disaster to the bass stocks.
if the goverment took there finger's out of there arse and banned inshore netting by part time fishermen bass stocks would be fine in north wales i no of people netting in nursery,s and have been for year's taking upto 100 fish a night.
I am 57years old, and lived here in Brighton all my life.I started fishing when i was 6 and still fish as much as possible. My favourite quarry has always been bass, but I have never killed a single fish, however big.I do eat bass which are farmed fish. But with all my efforts to conserve the stocks along with many others in my local area the fish are getting fewer every year. This is happening all along the south coast and further north.Surely the wholesale decimation of this species must stop before we have no more sport left.
I do not fish regularly nowadays, although in my younger days I fished every moment of every day that I could, cricket, girlfriends and studying permitting!
However I think I have kept up to date with the problem.
Unless there is a serious approach to sea fish farming by all European members, and that means them all, and I mean ALL members of the European Union, fish stocks will deplete completely.
In England, it is now virtually impossible to catch normal seasonal fish from the beach by rod and line. This is because there are miles and miles of nets dropped offshore to catch anything, sizeable or not.
Commercial fishing has gone mad. It is not UK Commercial fishers, they are so restricted and most of them have been driven out of business as a result of the UK actually adhering to European laws, we are law abiding folks, it seems the rest of Europe totally ignore European law, and their governments do not enforce it at all. What the ---- is the point of Europe, apparently designed for the benefit of all the ordinary people of Europe, if the English are the only people who abide by the laws!
What sort of fools are we!
Come on Europe - walk all over us - treat us like the idiots you perceive us to be - and allow our governments to make us!
When are we going to say NO! Stop taking the ----.
Can we have a political party which will stand against the 'immorality' of Europe.
It is not just Bass, it is Europe, Irational commercial self interest, politics etc etc.
This is part of a very big problem as the world gets more complex.
You do not have to be a rocket scientist to understand that politicians are only interested in themselves and their future income, they are not interested in the people who vote for them.
The answer, probably difficult to achieve, is 'nobody voting at all' I am not sure how democracy would deal with that! Interesting though!?
This petition, though admirable, does not tackle the real problem, n
I fully support a close season for Bass. Take a look at Greenpeace.org/dolphintou r/slideshows to see gutted common dolphins killed and gutted to hide the evidence by the commercial fishery exploiting breeding bass in the channel.
From the financial perspective it is probably vital that Guernsey retains its sea fishing potential (especially bass) otherwise anglers (and their families in many cases) will just go somewhere else for fishing/family holidays. From the environmental perspective, Guernsey has a fantastic coastline and the sea creatures around it should be allowed to live and breed. This is particularly important with regard to pair trawling, which sweeps up and drowns all sea creatures including undersize fish, dolphins and porpoises - many of which are dumped overboard dead). These trawlers must not be given the right to kill everything in the sea.
These fishes take so long to reach maturity, so to the states of guernsey sea fisheries(sic),how would you like it done to you - think of re-incarnation!
We have to protect bass (and other sea fish) stocks from over fishing, however it is being done. How else will our grandchildren be able to enjoy the fishing our fathers had?
