Stop this short-sightedness now. The value of a recreationally caught bass is ten times that of a commercially netted bass to a local economy. I will be fishing in Ireland this year where bass are protected.
We must stop killing the breeding stocks or there will be nothing left for the future. The impact may not be seen for a few years but by then it's too late...
Guys wake up this is the 21st century - tourism is worth millions to your economy. Kill off the stocks of fish and you cut off your arms and both legs. Wake up and look whats happening in Scotland with the Salmon and Salmon fishing based tourism. If your are not careful it will happen to you as well!
I'm an Auastralian born and bred guy, I think what is happening here is out wright stupidity.
I'm sure these fisherman can find these fish else where other than when they are spawning. It is just like these lazing bastards to do this. How would these fishermen like it if there where a big mob of blokes that would come in and do over there wives when they are spawning???
Imagine if this was the Great Barrier Reef in the top end of OZ. This is why we have fishing regulations and No Go Zones. So we don't wipe out fish.
Guernsey - 'The Islands of Choice' the TV advertisements tell us here in the UK, well it appears the Bass Anglers have chosen............. to give it a miss!
Measures have to be taken to protect breeding stocks of Bass to ensure a healthy stock for future generations to come.
Tourism and trade throughout the Bailiwick of Guernsey will without doubt be adversly effected, as it will throughout the U.K. should the slaughter of this important species be allowed to continue continue. Take heed from the demise of the humble Cod & Haddock within the Clyde Estuary. Charter Boat business and holiday/tourism is a mere fraction of what it was when stocks were considered to be "plentiful".
something has got to be done now, we've made a good step by banning pair trawling within U.K waters, we cannot keep tking breeding fish without expectin dire concequences in teh near future
In Southern Ireland we have no commercial exploitation of Bass. Since 1990 they have been recognised and protected as a valuable tourist resource. Apart from no commercial fishing there is also an angling size limit of 40 cms, a bag limit of 2 Bass in any 24 hours and a close season for spawning from 15th May to 15th June.
The time has come for the indiscriminate slaughter of this resource by a bankrupt industry to end. Time now for all nations with a similar vested interest in angling tourism to pull together in order to protect their charge.
I totally agree about this and thank you for putting the petition together. This is one of those things that seems like it will only be understood too late - after the fish are all gone.
These fish are being overexploited and wasted for greed. They need protection from a few individuals who do not care about the future of the bass population, they need to be stopped.
Guernsey must manage the Sea for everyone, not just local commercial fisherman.
We must have a closed season from Jan 1st to March 31st and after that recreational anglers should be limited to 2 fish day each.
Lots of UK anglers travel to Guernsey for some amazing angling - and the bass is one of the biggest lures of the Channel Islands.
If anglers are faced with severely depleted bass stocks, they will certainly reconsider their choice of venue.
Holidaying anglers spent huge amounts of cash. I ask the State, do you really want to lose this this major economic revenue? You will, if there is nothing left for anglers to spend their hard earned cash on...
Think about it, you wouldn't spend money in a supermarket that had nothing left on the shelves - would you?
I commend you on trying to sway the States way of thinking. However they have previous 'form' of going ahead regardless of what the people of Guernsey really want.
