In most large chain pet stores and even other ones in the USA, Betta fish (aka. Siamese Fighting Fish; Betta Splendens) for sale are kept in very poor environments.

These poor Betta fish are confined to little cups around 6 ounces in size, maybe less, and have only one water change a week, or two water changes if they are lucky, which pose a very large risk for health problems in Betta fish such as fin rot, ammonia burns, and other serious conditions due to unkempt environments. In a small container, ammonia and nitrites (two resulting chemicals from decomposing food and fish waste) build up very rapidly, and those two chemicals should not be measurable in a tank because they are deadly.

It is important to raise awareness about how little care these fish receive in the store and push for a change in their care routine to ensure that each Betta is as healthy as possible. More water changes throughout the week (one water change every other day, for example) will help keep these fish in their top condition allowing them to look and feel their best, as well as have a safe transition into their new homes.

With more water changes comes a much healthier environment, and it would help the merchant drive sales by bringing better quality fish to their potential customers. If the fish win, then the merchant and potential Betta owner both win.
