World of Warcraft (WoW) is an Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) played by millions of people world-wide. In the WoW Terms of Use it states that accounts may not be shared, except between a parent and one minor child. For whatever reason, many people do not read the
Terms of Use, not only for WoW, but most other activities. Particularly, many players are ignorant of the "non-sharing" term.
However, in this case it is benficial to Blizzard Entertainment; by allowing someone else to create a character on their account, subscribers expose others to the game. Blizzard offers trials to accomplish the same thing, but there are many reasons why players may share at first rather than using a trial, for example:
1. Person may not have a computer system of their own, AT THE TIME.
2. If they have their own computer, it may not meet the system requirements, AT THE TIME.
3. Friends sharing with other friends may not be old enough to subcribe for their own account yet.
4. Visiting friends/family want to try it.
And the list can go on and on.
It is very common that after having played the game on a friend or family's account, the person will become a subscriber him/herself. This is because only one character can be logged into the game at a time, thus preventing "true" account sharing. The very nature of the game prevents account sharing more than the Terms of Use. Quests, Raids, and other such in-game activity is time-consuming, and, in general, friends and family will have similar school/work/free-time/etc. schedules, making it very hard to have more than one person actively using an account.
Here is where Paid Character Transfer (
FAQ)comes in. This feature has long been requested by World of Warcraft subscribers, many of whom have shared an account and now want/have one of their own and wish to keep the character they started with. However, the Paid Character Transfer service has many limitations. Only one character can be transferred from an account and/or realm to another, once every 6 months, for a one-time fee of $25. In addition, it applies only to accounts with the same last name (where the subscriber is the same.) This one restriction eliminates many people from using this service, bringing us to the point of this petition.
The author and all undersigned are petitioning Blizzard Entertaintment to revise the Terms of Use and Paid Character Transfer service. The term for sharing accounts should be removed because it is unecessary. The Paid Character Transfer last name restriction should also be changed to accomodate the large number of people who want to make use of this service. Some of these groups may include:
Friends
Non-"nuclear" Family (including "step"-family)
Couples who are not married or were not married at the time of account sharing and subsequent new account creation
ETC.
It is proposed that in place of the last name restriction, credit card billing verification be used instead, along with a "confirmation"-type e-mail sent to both subscribing e-mail addresses to approve the character account/realm transfer.
A Blizzard Customer Service representative said that customer satisfaction is "a top priority." If this is the case, do not ignore the huge base of members who are disappointed by these restrictions.
