A vote was held at UEA at the end of last term, whether to boycott Coca-Cola company products or not. This was held because many people felt that the treatment by Coca-Cola of farmers and workers in developing countries was unethical. For full details of these claims, see the Coke thread on the UEA Student forums (bottom).

This vote was held in the last week of term when many students were either busy with coursework or course tests, or had already left to go home. Only 11% of students voted on the boycott. It is the opinion of many that this is not fair democracy. 11% of students should not dictate what the other 89% are and are not allowed to buy and drink.

If this petition gets enough signatures, we will pressure the union to re-hold the vote, giving everyone a second chance to express their opinions.

The vote will:
---Be held at a time that is convenient for everyone, and does not clash with exams, reading week, or any other event that may affect the number of people able to vote
---Require at least 50% of students to vote before the outcome will actually be put into effect, to ensure a proper representation of the student body
---Have a widely publicised and easily acessible voting system online for students who wish to vote but are not able to make it to the voting location
---Be accompanied by widely available and well publicised information about the Coca-Cola company, and facts for and against the boycott so that everyone can make an informed decision

Please sign this petition to show your support for proper democratic voting, and to give people another chance to fight for the freedom to drink what they want.

Please sign the petition using your UEA email (e.g. j.bloggs@uea.ac.uk) so that we can verify that you are all students who want to participate in decisions for YOUR university.
