"Boston Legal", one of the most consistently clever and funny U.S. shows on TV these days, looks to have been cancelled.

ABC announced yesterday that it has picked up nine of its major primetime scripted series for a new season starting in the Fall. Returning shows include hits like "Brothers & Sisters," "Desperate Housewives," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," and "Ugly Betty". Four of the nine are also newcomers this past season - "Dirty Sexy Money," "Private Practice," "Pushing Daisies," "Samantha Who?".

'Boston' however is not on the list. On the one hand it isn't a huge surprise considering the show does only respectable (albeit not major) ratings numbers. On the other though, its frequent industry accolades and key viewer demographic figures (the show gets more highly educated and wealthy viewers than practically any other drama on the box) make it one of the network's most profitable shows.

David E. Kelley Productions however still plans to finish its 22-episode order of this season (only 14 were finished pre-strike) and it could be back in front of cameras as soon as next Wednesday - making it the first drama to resume shooting post-strike.

Whilst the network hasn't officially announced a cancellation, it's notable absence (and that of Anne Heche drama "Men in Trees") has raised some eyebrows. In any case if it has been nixed, the network has given the producers eight episodes to wrap up storylines.
