I'm an Independant Performing Artist and P2P software on the Internet is the best way to distribute my original songs. I don't want CIRA or RIIA or anyone else telling me what I can't or can't do with my own intellectual property! Make legislation for the Internet that is based on the Internet and not other outdated laws written for different things (like the record industry) and just adapted for the Internet. Start fresh!

The WIPO treaties are just more cost, more energy-robbing friction, and more entropy, all stiffling normal everyday human interactions, and they will eventually suffocate civilization and progress. When can I expect to receive a ceast-and-desist letter because I used a copyrighted phrase in a converstation with someone? Sigh.

Neil Brougham said 11/09/04, 4:41 am (verified)

A "notice and takedown" system will not enhance our Canadian Heritage but could and probably would cause hardship, censorship and a loss of privacy rights for many honest Canadians.

The price of blank media has been taxed to recoup the cost of piracy... no further action is required as I have to pay levies on media that I DON'T USE FOR PIRACY, not just what I use for movies.

The current copyright system is more than adequet for current needs. Compensation is all ready built into every CD-R/burner/mp3 player that we, the consumer buy. Yah, everyone downloads something, but your getting compensated indirectly already. Quit taking away our rights when we are already paying for them already!!!

Robert Brunelle said 11/09/04, 2:13 am (verified)
This runs against any effort at conscientious global cooperation. Also, the nature of the Internet is essentially that of free exchange. There will always be abuse, but to ascribe powers of "control" to convenient parties whose interests and organization never included policing their clients will create situations that encroach on individual rights.
#185

John Maxwell said 11/09/04, 2:09 am (verified)
This approach to copyright is headed in the wrong direction; it is harmful to innovation, culture, communications, and public dialogue. Please don't grant these kinds of powers to the "rights industry" at the expense of the rest of society.

I am not just another enter-email-and-click protester. I am a normal citizen living in Toronto. I do not think an ISP should be held liable for someone else's actions. Any action that might destroy someone's property should have probable cause, in the form of a court order or warrant. It should not become a tool for lawyers, damaging innocent people, as it has become in other countries. Keep Canada free from this kind of bullying, please.

I am a Canadian and I live in my own country. I do not want a foreign country or power dictating what I can and cannot do with my Canadian Culture. Our unique culture and language is slowly being eroded away. By bowing to external interests we will be losing even more of what makes us Canadian.

Copyright law, originally a fair even-handed contract between copyright holders and the public, has already become strongly biased in favour of copyright holders and their profit-seeking intermediaries. These changes would only make things worse.
