Our country's government does not "govern" anymore. It seems to me they want to "dictate" the people who put them there. That would mean our once great country is moving to a more dictatorship style of government. SAD

Whatever copyright may once have been intended to achieve, it is clear that now more than ever it serves only to concentrate money, power and information in the hands of a few corporate interests. Please stand up for the rights of ordinary Canadians by not ratifying the WCT. The interests of the Canadian people will not be served by restricting the dissemination of knowledge and culture.
#381

Brandon Bidewell said 09/15/05, 11:27 pm (verified)
I don't believe that the current laws need to be changed to suit a few copyright holders at the expense of the general public. What does the public get from these changes? My understanding of the system is that it should be designed to benefit the public in the long term while providing a reasonable reward system for creators. Politicians should be acting in the general interest, and these proposed changes appear to be to the sole benefit of a few.

Canadian Citizen. China required radios to be sold with a transmetting device to see if someone was listening to the undermining democracy propaganda that was broadcasted. But we are much better than that, aren't we?

This all needs more publicity. Almost everyone I talk to seems to think they have no say in whether bill c-60 & WCT is ratified or not. We're just sitting back and letting it happen. The general public needs to know A) that they may be targeted. These bills doen't just apply to hackers and people sharing child porn and B)That there are ways they can fight back. The internet obviously isn't getting the message out to the majority of Canadians. We need to get positive coverage in print and on telivision.

This sort of 'guilty until proven innocent' system, where a simple mention from an untrusted source can shut down someone's internet access, is incredibly open to abuse. As with most of the other proposed copyright extensions.

The WIPO treaties implications have had since 1998 to play out in the US and the DCMA. The chilling effects of takedown letters are well documented. If you want me to take down some material, come after *me*, not an intermediary. And if you want me to take it down, you'd best have proof that'll hold up in court that it's illegal. Unsubstantiated letters are _not_ due process.
