Restore CBC Radio Two

Created by Margaret Logan on 16 May 2007 @ 2:18:05 PM

On March 19, 2007, CBC Radio 2 cancelled its excellent evening classical music programming, and the immensely informative Arts Report, and the award-winning Two New Hours. We consider that with these changes the management of our only national public broadcaster has compromised its tradition of providing stimulating and informed programming. We also believe that these changes are not consistent with the CBC mandate and the recent UNESCO treaty on cultural diversity.

The public voices of many dedicated and world-class Canadian writers, hosts, composers, producers and artists are being muted. If the changes are allowed to stand and the trend to continue, the CBC will have entirely squandered its unique capacity to represent the arts, with their inherent qualities of “complexity, depth and order”.

We, the undersigned, believe the new programming is a retrograde step, one that duplicates material readily available on other stations and compromises the cultural integrity of our public broadcaster. We respectfully insist that the current programming changes to Radio 2 be revisited, and the damage reversed by reinstating the type of intelligent, provocative and informative programming that has long been a hallmark of Radio 2.

5045Ron AndersonHey there, just to let you know that I listen to CBC radio 2 more than I watch TV. I find CBC radio 2 inspiring compared to TV which seems to me to be just an annoying distraction.
5044Gloria CristobalThis must not be taken away from us.
5043Stacy ErnstThe CBC has been a part of my life since I was a child in my grandma\'s kitchen listening to operas on Saturday afternoons. As a young adult, I continue to listen to CBC radio 2 every morning precisely because of the classical programing. Classical music is part of my life everyday and takes up most of my spare time as a chorister in the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. I am not a paid musician I am an amateur with a deep love of this type of music. I believe that my love of classical music is because of that exposure to it as a child. If classical music, which has already been removed from many schools, is taken off the CBC airways, not fostered via young artist competitions, not recorded by our own artists and not talked about on wonderful programs such as Sound Advice Canadian listeners will be the ones who suffer the most and the CBC will successfully become as uninteresting and bland as every other radio station on the airways. Shame on the CBC for sacrificing a Canadian institution in favor of already overplayed pop music. Keep Radio two the way it is! Go mess with Radio Three!

5040Marten KoopsI have been listening to CBC classical music programs for 40 years. They are national treasures that have carried me through many a tough time.
5039Brenda SwinglehurstI have woken up to Tom Allan for many years now and have stayed tuned into cbc throughout the day. I now change stations at 6pm regularly and with the further cuts in the classical content, I shall go elsewhere for my musical entertainment, information and education. I feel betrayed by the powers-that-be and along with the many thousands across Canada, I feel ignored and inconsequential. I hope this wonderful CANADIAN radio station will reconsider and and give CANADIANS what they most want to hear. Thank you.

5035Jean Ashworth BartleOn behalf of the thousands of young people in this country who listen to and truly value the CBC Radio 2 which they listen to ..(Tom Allen in the a.m. and Jurgen in the late afternoon and special 8.00p.m. broadcasts-stop the madness!!!!!!!!!! They LOVE classical music because they perform classical music!!
5034Diane KettnerIt is well known that the fall of Rome was caused by the loss of its culture. CBC has been one of our strongest cultural providers. It is now sliding down to the Lowest Common Denominator.
5033shirley clementThis is a huge mistake. Must we dumb down everything now?! Pleae re-instate the classical music content immediately.
5032Theodore KolokolnikovIt is outrageous that cbc is going ahead with this, without any public consultation!!Who is behind this coup d\'etat?

5030Kathy WatsonI strongly recommend to the CBC mandarins that they consider who pays for this station, Radio 2, and any of the other CBC stations, be they radio or television. We, the long-suffering Canadian taxypayers should be asked our opinions about programming, and not just stuck with corporate decisions. I am really upset with the current proramming on Radio 2, and very upset that most of the hosts are leaving the station. If you think that you are going to garner a young, more vibrant audience, you are quite wrong....these people will be running around with IPods stuck in their ears, listening to stations they have targetted already. There are many Canadians, both young, middle-aged, and seniors who appreciate the excellent mix that Radio 2 afforded for many years. I must also say here that I am disgusted with the two press releases on the CBC web site justifying the changes. Just who do they think they appeal to? It\'s time we taxpayers started getting really vocal about where our dollars go when they hit the CBC. Is this the People\'s Radio Station or not?
