Evening classical music programming, the Arts Report, and Two New Hours are mostly what I listen to - please do not cancel these quintessential CBC programs.
I was disturbed to hear that the CBC has cut these programs, especially in light of recent CRTC changes that do not restrict advertisements on television programming. Canadian artists, writers, programmers are being silenced, and more often the programming being offered does not respect the integrity of the Canadian public. Please reconsider this decision. Sincerely, Paul NeudorfMontreal, Quebec
The lack of classical music on the radio is already very apparent. CBC owes a duty to continue to support the classics and to provide our composers with a medium for their works to be heard and appreciated.
I am not pleased with the changes to the Radio 2 network. I do not like Tonic and although there are interesting programs on Canada Live, often I don't listen because I have changed the station when Tonic comes on.Also I really miss the Arts Report.
I am dismayed by the 'dumbing' down of Radio Two as far as music and arts content. It used to be the window on cross-Canadian culture and now that window is virtually shut
CBC Radio 2 in the past has provided a voice for diverse musicians, writers and thinkers from all over the country, enriching us all, especially those of us who cannot travel. As a composer myself, I have benfitted from the programming that has now been cut. How will I know the unique voice of other Canadians if I can't hear them?
CBC program cancellations
make one very nervous. What will go next? I enjoy many so very excellent music slots with exceptionally knowledgeable wonderful hosts. Put this one back.
The CBC Web site has just announced the new “Sunday Show”. The article states that with this show, the second phase of a revamp of CBC Radio Two is now underway, yet “the shape of the programming has yet to be decided.” It also confirms that Symphony Hall and On Stage are “on the chopping block”. It appears that one of the most important cultural outlets in this country is in the hands of executives that lack the necessary vision and leadership for their role. Why has the Board of Directors not resigned over this? Are they asleep at the switch?
I am a passionate advocate for serious contemporary music. I am also an agent for young Canadian performers such as Shauna Rolston and composers such as Robert Lemay, Douglas Schmidt and the extraordinary Heather Schmidt. I can't imagine how CBC could cancel Two New Hours -the one programme that celebrates Canada's new music. Shame!!
CBC cultural programming is at the heart of what sustains Canada's distinctiveness from its commercially co-opted neighbour . Please fulfill your patriotic commitment in holding these positions of public trust, by maintaining quality radio programming for your listeners across Canada, and the support of talented voices through the profiling of your recording initiatives. Trust your experienced producers and hosts to know the tastes of their listeners. And above all, trust that we ARE LISTENING!
Your principal demographic may be over 40, but they are a sizable percentage of the population and frankly, their needs matter in exactly equal measure to those termporarily under 40!
Dumbing down is a violation of your mandate.
The CBC is a cultural phenomenon that is directly responsible for the relative unity and identity of this nation. Please take that job seriously - to some extent, the future of Canadian society depends on your judgement and actions.
