I rarely listen to 94.1 fm after 6:00pm.The programming does not impress me.It is scattered and does not seems to meet any listeners needs. If it is intended for the young I don't recall such programming on their radio. What is the function of the Laurie Brown program other than to annoy?
Why should I have to switch to Radio 1 to hear a complete news broadcast, or a detailed weather report? As for the programming changes aimed at a different, younger demographic, that demographic will
I wonder about the choice to go into a lot of latin american sound, which probably has a very limited audience, and jazz, which has a definitely limited appeal, in an effort to capture younger audiences, who are probably listening to rock or rap or whatever the Hell. And those of use who like classical are left in the lurch.
Since Radio 1 has become so terrible, I would like to listen to Radio 2 more frequently, but I miss the news on Radio 2, as well as the classical music.
As a recent returnee to Canada from 35 years in the UK I am shocked and appalled by the miserable news content on the CBC as a whole, the poor excuse for a Classical music staion - has no one at the CBC ever heard of the wonderful classical station BBC3??? Their
After I spent five years teaching in overseas schools, one of the major reasons for my return to Canada was the fact that I was really missing my culture, and, by that, I meant radio2, with its delicious airing all day every day of classical music. Imagine my surprise and disappointment to find that this station has been dumbed down, to the extent that the number of hours has been cut, and the classical content of the remaining portion has been diluted even more than was formerly the case.
The loss of Music for a While means that we turn off the radio for the rest of the evening. For those of us who live outside the large Metopolitan areas, Radio 2 used to be a wonderful contact to a rich cultural world. Now radio 2 seems to be in competion with every local commercial station.
I wonder who we are trying to impress with the new direction of CBC Radio 2 programming? On Saturday Afternoon I can hear the radios being switched off, all over this country, the minute the opera performance is over. Mr Richardson has single-handedly ruined Saturday Afternoon at the Opera with obtuse and irrelevant reference material to fill in time before and after the opera.I am not alone in this criticism as this subject comes up at all of our opera outings either to the cinema or the VO. I feel it will just be a matter of time now before someone will start playing jazz on our beloved SATO.Rick Phillips has been seriously abbreviated for this nonsense that Bill Richardson feels passes for an opera programme. Beleive me Ms. McQuire people are livid. They really are switching off in numbers. I wish you could walk around the lobby of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre at the intermission and do your surveys there.I am not alone in this criticism as this subject comes up at all of our opera outings either to the cinema or the Vancouver Opera.I have been listening to CBC radio since around 1974 and it has been a great joy! Coming from UK with BBC, I was always telling people that we, in Canada, had something better. We had CBC! Those days are over. Bombarded inexplicably, when least expecting it, with jazz, right, left and centre. Jazz which makes me not just disapprove. It makes me angry. Music is not supposed to do this.Sincerely,Kenneth Hay.Nanoose Bay,British Columbia.
Friends in Germany and the Netherlands who have spent time in Canada often tell me how much they admire the CBC -- unfortunately, I regularly have to explain that the CBC which they were so impressed by is being gradually and inexorably gutted by governments who think this is all about market share.
When will C.B.C. accept that the older generation are its prime listeners and stop invading our ears with a so called appeal to the younger generation.Katie Mallock does a good job but I miss Dannielle tremendously. And the suggestion that Choral Concert might hit the skids is unbelievable. Just that wonderful inter-continental link that they do do at Christmas justifies its existance.
At one time I considered CBC 2 to be one of the best broadcasters in the world, superior in many ways even to the renowned BBC and US NPR. With the gradual erosion of quality programming by CBC 2 in recent years and particularly since March 2007, I find myself turning to other radio stations (and my CD player) for listening enjoyment. The dropping of programs hosted by knowledgeable and articulate broadcasters such as Howard Dyck and Rick Phillips, among others, or the informal relaxed evening music formerly provided by Danielle Charbonneau, is an unconscionable act of cultural vandalism. It is my understanding that the Sunday morning program Choral Concert is also being considered for sacrifice on the alter of trendiness or “appeal to younger listeners” by CBC management. They would do well to consider the very strong tradition of choral music in Canada and its power as a unifying form of art and communication, both nationally and internationally. Why must Canadians endure the downgrading of what used to be a national treasure? CBC has a mandate and duty to be a cultural leader and not to seek the lowest common denominator.
Danielle Charbonneau brought joy to my life. After a stressful day at work, I could always count on coming home and hearing her lovely voice and the perfect pieces she chose, describing them with her calm insight. The CBC has killed something precious to me and many others. Unlike physical death, this decision can be reversed. Do it now, CBC.
At certain times of the day, I can barely bring myself to listen to Radio 2, with the new changes. Especially your new station identification guy. He sounds pretentious and amateurish, and he really needs medical attention for his sinus condition, which is obvious every time he speaks. You can do much better, CBC. Now you sound just like any other standard commercial radio station.
I am extremely upset with cbc radio 2 over the programing changes mentioned in this petition. i find myself repeatedly turning to cds instead of listening to so much crap. the new jazz katie malic is positioned in a very bad time slot which should be playing classical music through the dinner hours. As jazz programing the Katie Malic show is a disappointment.there is is no question that
As the changes in programming began to appear I was extremely disturbed and decided to write CBC stating my objections. I have had no response. Today I discovered the above petition. I endorse it wholeheartedly and am happy to add my name to the cause for better broadcasting.
I have been a CBC listener for 60 years but no longer. The recent purging of classical music programs and replacement by jazz and so-called would music have made the CBC unlistenable to me. The popular music stations on the rest of the dial do a better job for the masses. CBC was the only haven for the listener to find symphonic and chamber music with hosts who knew what they were talking about. When they dropped Danielle Charbonneau, Howard Dick, Andrew Craig, and Rick Phillips, among others, I gave up on CBC. Fortunately I have access to KING FM Seattle on cable with 24 hours of classical music,
and I will also be using my CD and vinyl much more extensively.
When listening to a rock and roll station, they don't throw in an hour of opera, or classical - why did CBC do this sort of thing for Radio2 listeners?
As a Canadian, I find it outrageous that I have to turn to WNED out of Buffalo to listen to classical music. Even the so-called classical programs on CBC are regularly interrupted with pop, world or jazz selections. In addition, I almost never hear works longer than one movement. Why has the CBC turned its back on our serious musical heritage in favour of ephemeral popular music?
I seldom listen to Radio 2 in the evening any more. I miss the classical music programming, the arts reports and the news. I think you have tuned out a lot of people like me .
Although it's been six months since the CBC changed it's programming, I'm still, daily, dismayed by the dreadful alternatives that took place of my favourite shows. Our radios were always tuned to the CBC from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days a week. Now, though I still listen at work, we turn to our CD collection after dinner and sometimes even sooner. It's heartbreaking to witness the slow decay. Please bring back the level of excellence and depth the CBC always stood for in the past.
CBC has significantly downgraded its radio 2 programming with its recent changes. The schlock that has replaced what used to be there is readily available by other means should one want to hear it. On the other hand that which has been removed was only available in Canada on CBC. Return to the style of programs that were available prior to Feb '07
The minimizing of CBC's classical music programming and arts coverage, not to mention the abbreviated news converage sells all listeners short. Radio Two is in a unique position to unify, edify, delight and inform Canadians, and with the changes made in March 2007, that mandate has been seriously compromised. Moving forward is one thing, moving away from your listeners is quite another. Please restore that which made CBC Radio Two special.
THis was a horrible decision and has really interferred with my quality of life for evenings after work. The arts report is sorely missed as well as the classical music. For the life of me I cannot see why we would have two news reports for CBC - I have to keep switching at 4 5 and 6 pm to CBC 1. Please restore everything to what it was before March 19 and the sooner the better.
Danielle Charboneau's wonderful selection of classical music provided much-need calm at the end of a busy day. Now there is nowhere to go for non-commercial music for grownups. I've given up and downloaded all my CDs onto my iPod. I never listen to Radio 2 anymore, but since I'm demographically unacceptable, I imagine CBC management is delighted to see the back of me.
I never listen to Radio2 at night anymore.I tried when the changes were first implemented. The cbc has replaced classical music with jazz.Even though there is growing interest (in record breaking numbers- from all ages) for classical music.I started listening to cbcfm when I was 26. And ,now ,I am 44. You have lost me as a listener.
The changes are rather disgusting. Let the iPodders and the MP3'ers go elsewhere for the cheap sounding poppy jazz stuff. Can't serious music listeners have at least one little niche their own?
I've always thought of CBC Radio 2 as my main source of classical music but not any more. With the new format that includes way too much
Not only should radio2 go back to its emphasis on classical music and the arts, it should also go back to its 5 minute hourly newscasts with a half hour of news at 6:00pm. This used to allow us to stay tuned to radio2 the whole day.
WNED'Fm 94.5 (Buffalo) has become my favorite station for classiical music (24 hours a day,
I hardly ever listen to CBC any more, either for news or classical music (when CBC decides to let us have a little. Good luck with the petitiion. KGF
The recent loss of Danielle Charbonneau is perhaps the last straw. Thankfully, there are many alternative radio sources online that this post-49 geezer can turn to.
