The Changes to CBC Radio 2 make me sick. I miss falling asleep to After Hours and If I can't wake up to classical music in the morning then I will not listen to CBC anymore
Horrified to hear of the changes, although they have been coming down the pike for some time. Why program music on Radio 2 that can be heard elsewhere? Any time that the CBC has attempted to do something
During my university years, my friends and I were attracted to the CBC's challenging programming (creative audio-drama, serious music, incisive artist interviews, etc) as a means to educate ourselves so that we could make informed, adult decisions about the cultural materials (events, recordings, publications, etc) available to us in our multicultural community. The CBC impressed us as mature, authoritative, informative and Canadian. It seems ironic that the very qualities we valued -- the qualities that appealed to us as young people eager to expand our horizons -- are deplored by the present CBC management as alienating to young Canadians. The attitude of the present CBC insults the intellect and imagination of the young people it claims to serve with puerile and insipid chicanery.
Additional announcements yesterday that we are also going to lose our early morning classical programming were heart-breaking. Classical music lovers will have no choice but to listen to American programming, which is a travesty.
Your programming changes targeting youth make no sense. Most youth regard them as phony, like a grandfather wearing his cap backwards, and will not switch to CBC. And many adult long-term listeners despise them and are switching away. I switched away 3 years ago after over 30 years of daily listening.
In their current incarnations, CBC radio's music channels (Radio 2 and Espace Musique) are doing an impressive job of spoiling Canada's well-earned reputation for quality public broadcasting (until recently, probably the best in the world after the BBC). Please bring back Radio 2 (pre March 2007) and Le Chaine Culturel - I really miss hearing Radio Canada's wonderful program La Grande Fugue on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The CBC's English and French networks desperately need a third channel that will allow pop (chanson) and classical music to exist on seperate services. Radio 2's programming is now something akin to having BBC Radios 1 and 3 coexist on the same channel. That simply won't work. I hope a solution can be found soon since the CBC is fast undermining its raison d'etre.
okay, I love Tonic. I love Katie Malloch. But I miss the rest of the programming in the evenings too much. And the Canada Live program just makes no sense. I never know from one night to the next if I'll want to tune it in - is it blues, is it jazz, is it classical, is it country
there is noplace else to go for this programming. internet and satellite aside, many still do not have access to them, and cbc not only provides access but also encourages support of many artists and an art form that is so precious. we in vancouver have lost one of our main classical music stores - the magic flute. it went around the same time as your program changes and was heartbreaking. thank you.
Radio Two has been among the best in the world for serious music and excellent presentation. If we loose this we will have nowhere left to hear the best of Canadian performers and orchestras!
Bring back the old Radio 2. I have simply stopped listening to the new one. You destroyed a great cultural institution in order to broadcast kitchy pop music.
CBC 2 was one of the only nice things about paying taxes in Canada. New formats on Radio 2 (and Radio one) are mainly irritating and emulate the very worst of commercial broadcasting. A
I find that the programming on Radio 2 has significantly declined since the cahnge in programming. I am particularly concerned at the very much reduced amount of classical music and the attemp to foist on listeners a great deal of
Rock /Pop Music on FM CBC. I don't think so. Commercial stations do just fine in that area. Moreover I am able to get 98.1 Seattle via cable radio which plays 24 hours of classical music. Listeners in BC will stop listeningto CBC Fm
What kind of Management thinks that alienating their long term customers is a reasonable process. The assumption that we would all enjoy a dose of mindless pap is insulting to say the least.
The reduction in the classical music programmes I love has broken my heart. CBC radio now sounds like any commercial station. Why should my taxes pay for that? Why should Canadians be deprived of the best of the arts, as we had all our lives until now? Why should we have to listen to endless promo's for the station itself, all cutesy and loud?
When the CBC took the wonderful Northern Lights off the air....I switched to NPR which, in Victoria, comes through loud and clear. And as for the Muzak from midnight to whenever...please, private radio does that so much better.
I can't bear to listen to radio 2 in the evening any more, it used to be so CALMING. I miss the news, too difficult to scroll back and forth between stations. My radio 2 listening is down at least 50%
In addition to the above comments, I question the wisdom of such eclectic programming within one program. I would if many listen to some of the programs through as the genre changes from one selection to the other.
I fully agree with the contents of this petition. With the new policy for CBC Radio 2, the CBC is slavishly imitating programs that other stations do just as well if not better. I think it is dumbing down and going slumming. If this depolarble trend continues, there will be no point in contining to subsidize the corporation with the taxpayer's money.
I have been a faithful CBC2 listener for more than a decade...until these changes were made. Now, I search the dial for classical music. I now refer to CBC2 as CBCJazz because that's what it has become. CBC2 certainly used to play some jazz. Now it plays some (read very little) classical. It's really too bad.
The changes to Radio 2 have been very disapointing to our family. The after 18.30 programming is very poor and fortunately Espace Musique is there with classical music concerts. We also miss the Sunday morning concerts : as much as we find Gregory Charles amusing , the tone of the offerings are not conducive to the time of reflection needed at this time of the week.
