The CBC is federally funded therefore the size of listenership should not be of consideration in programming Radio 2. It is the only opportunitiy for artists and arts organizations to have a national platform.
I am a regular listener to Radio 2 morning classical music with Tom Allan. It is one of the outstanding radio programs offered by CBC, a hallmark of Canadian culture, and what differentiates CBC from the background noise of commercial radio.
Too many excellent shows have already been lost: Music for Awhile, In Performance, After Hours, Jazz Beat ... Please bring these shows back and don't cut further classical programming.
Congratulations CBC! In one fell swoop you have alienated your long-standing and faithful audience (composed of people of ALL ages, including potential listeners for many years to come) and have accomplished nothing towards building a new audience. What makes you think that hard-core fans of rap, jazz, etc. are going to choose a station that features EVERYTHING, and the easiest of easy listening? Quite likely they will rather turn up their noses at such insipid wishy-washiness. You had a perfect niche market, it's not too late to get it back! Remember the old fable about trying to please everybody - you end up pleasing NOBODY.
Publicly funded radio was designed to promote the arts in Canada. Without Radio 2's classical format a large portion of the population will be without an opportunity to learn and enjoy classical music and Canadian performers of classical music. The move away from classical music is extremely short sighted.
Several generations of radio listeners have learned to love and appreciate classical music through CBC's programming. If you continue to water down the format you are actively contributing the progressive stupifying of the nation.
Don't offer US pitiful webcams or on demand shows. Ww all want ON DEMAND RADIO TWO WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC AND OUR BELOVED HOSTS : FRIESEN, GOTHE, PHILLIPS, ALLEN, ET.AL.
The present format is one that I find stimulating throught the 24 hour clock. During the day, I enjoy the music, whatever jandre and whatever info that is both knowledgable and skillfully presented.During the night, I feel format provided not only an ambiant listening experience but also feel I am with comfortable friends. I would appreciate the format as is. Love you CBC Radio 2, Awesome work!.
PLEASE reconsider the decision to cut down on classical music on CBC2...especially felt when summering in Northern Ontario! We waited SO long for CBC2 to arrive there and now THIS!
Please, please, please! Don't gut the daytime schedule on CBC! It was bad enough when we lost Music for Awhile last year. I've tried very hard to appreciate the light, jazzy numbers meant to appeal to a broader audience on Tonic. But, for goodness sake, what good is the tonic without the gin!? Don't water down the classical programming on CBC any more! Please don't take away the wonderful music programmes that offer real food for thought! What makes the CBC think that young people just want easy listening? We want substance, we want challenging music. CBC should aspire to be a leader in broadcasting, not just another face in the crowd.
We are long time supporters of FM2 Classsical programs and are greatly disturbed with changers planned in CBC 2 format. Please reconsider your proposed changes.Sincerely Ian Whitelaw.
I used to enjoy CBC 2 all evening long, now, after the shortened news, it gos off. I have no interest in the Jazz, pop rock music that follows. Don't lose any more highly prized sessions by Tom Allen, Catherine Belyea, Eric Friesen, Jurgen Goth, to name just a few.
I am appalled by the changes CBC has made so far, and very apprehensive of what is to come. CBC has been a companion to me since I came to Canada over 30 years ago. I like its focus on serious music, classical and otherwise. I wish CBC administrators could explain the reasons behind the drastic changes they have made and are about to make.Radio2 has been and still is to a large extent a wonderful and UNIQUE radio station. Why try to make it like any other?
This must be the two steps back that are said always to follow the one forward. Whoever is making this decision must be working in conjunction with whoever determines the awful programming on cbc-tv which I almost never watch. Fortunately other classical music stations are sometimes available, and I do have enough cds and lps to cope until the dumbing down comes to an end. This is cause for national shame.--Stephen Black
I am appalled at what is happening. If the CBC goes downmarket to become like other statiions, there will be no reason for a public broadcaster. This decision is a disaster in every way. Is it being made by people who dislike the CBC and its audience?
As a member of the unwanted demographic who has for many years enjoyed and learned about classical music and jazz from the many wonderful hosts, I wish to protest the changes. Canada does not need another light music station. Canada does need a station which honours the richness of cultural life in Canada. Unless those dreadful changes are revisited and reversed, Canada, and its many cultural organizations, will be deprived of their deserved place on both the national and the international stage. Formerly CBC Radio 2 did this very well. Clearly I am now entirely dependent upon my own stock of music, much of it purchased after hearing it on the CBC.
After decades of never adjusting our radio's dial, we will miss CBC2, which is sacrificing the loyal audience it has for the younger audience it wishes to capture. Alas! This foolish pandering is not likely to succeed any more than the last year's changes have.
I am a 26 year old university graduate who works as a middle school teacher in the Halton Board. I mainly listen to the radio in the car - where I have no access to websites and rely soley on the signals that my car radio can acquire. I am quite disappointed by the proposed changes. The CBC currently offers a quality of programming that is not offered on any other station. I have nothing against
Radio 2 used to be a classical music station which I listened to almost full time. Now I listen only in the mornings. The rest of the time I listen to the ABC (Australian) classics station. Perhaps we need a new CBC classic station like it used to be years ago. No pop, no jazz.
The continued decline of CBC Radio 2 is appalling. For SHAME! Q in the afternoons on Radio 1 is no replacement for the AM Arts Report on CBC Radio 2. And there is NO replacement for Classical music offered at all. This is just awful, and most distressing.
I have always relied on CBC to present classical music, and I generally listen all day long. There is no other option for classical music in Canada, and to marginalize this is a shame. I also mourn the loss of the Arts Report
