The dumbing down of the CBC has been going on for years. It is an insult to Canadians and a betrayal of the CBC's responsibility to the population that funds it.
I put in whatever date. This is a protest on the slated program changes on CBC 2 for Sounds Like Canada. It is the only radio station that still has classical music. My grandson who is now 18 has always listened to CBC1
Classical music is vital to my being. I am 49 just the supposed target audience. I can get pop music anywhere. I dropped radio canada when they dropped most of their classical music content.Their Espace Music concept is about on par with elevator music. Bland stuff without spirit. As one private radio station commented about all of Radio-Canada:
CBC Radio 2 must understand that it is the only government-funded radio station that actually plays a variety of Romantic and 20th century music that challenges its listeners. With a major cutback in live performances and recordings of this music, we will be left with the 'fluff' of Classical 96.3, and that is very sad. We must think about the people in isolated parts of the country who rely on this programming for something other than Haydn and Mozart.
I agree with Russell Smith that if CBC is going to do the same thing on Radio 2 as commercial radio, what's the point of supporting it with tax dollars. Keep the classical music we can't get elsewhere!
Do not cut back on coverage of Classical music..It is essential to our survival as sane, rational human beings. If the CBC won't listen to the majority of its listeners then I strongly suggest that the station be BOYCOTTED. That will certainly force a reconsideration of the issue.
I feel that I have been deserted by the CBC -- I live alone and cherished having classical music to dine by and go to sleep by. I also deplore the trend for fewer and fewer classical concerts in the evening slot
I believe this movement on behalf of the tax payer supported CBC is devastating. It is retrograde in its thinking and minimizes the value of the corporation.and what it purports to stand for. We need quality in our programming not mediocrity.
Shame on the beaurocrats at the CBC Radio 2 for destroying a unique national treasure. Not all of us live in Toronto where cultural opportunities are just down the street. Every time I travel outside of Canada (and inside too) I thank God for the CBC and its beautiful music and intelligent opinion. The one thing we don't need is another station playing the same middle-of-the-road music as everyone else.
I'm sick of CBC's backstabbing actions. Mcguire says research and polls support this change.....where do all the loyal cbc listeners come in the picture? I was certainly never given a choice. There are so many different stations catering to every genre out there. Why are we loosing the one station that has such a long history of playing classical music?
I am particularly upset at the proposed cancellation of disc Drive - a haven of sanity at the end of the day - and the excellent Rick Phillips programme on Saturday. These programmes sustain me when I am busy in the kitchen. There has in the past been something interesting to listen to at any time of day. but now listeners' intellingence is being insulted by exhortations to listen to other stuff: no more interruptions please.
I am a teen and I love to listen to this station. Why are they taking away the only good classical/jazz station away from us? And the rest of the kids in the future to come?
CBC Radio is the last refuge for lovers of real music from the shallow formulas of pop music! By playing low-brow music, programmers are killing every last vestige of culture in an already culture-starved country. I am a young adult, a taxpayer, and I love listening to instrumental music, even if I don't always understand it. Please don't let music die.
this is nuts! i am not computer literate but i understand the old culture. nothing can compare with the peace that comes with a graceful passage from the wealth of the ages. Tonic is though medicine that usually is remedied by a swift punch of the dial. the only refuge in canada from a droning of the banal is cbc2. surely i will not have to be a cultural refuge to wned in the land of george bush to maintain sanity. irony is too cruel a fate.
I grew up listening to CBC Radio 2. I am now a professional classical musician. My knowledge of classical music was immeasurably expanded because of CBC Radio 2. I think this change in programming is a sellout. It is the start down a very dangerous road leading to no classical music on a Canadian radio station. Shame on the CBC.
We listen to CBC 2 mainly for the classical music. While we do appreciate the new music ( our son is a musician - part of Broken Social Scene amongst other groups!) If you cancel your classical programming I can assure you that our dial will be switch permanently to public radio broadcasts from the US which concentrate exclusively on classical music!
Less accessible music is not less attractive music. We need to start valuing art music, like they do in Europe. I hate z103 and c100 and all those other mindless stations.
I've listened to CBC Radio2 for interesting arts and music programming since I decided in grade 4 that I was more interested in Mozart than Michael Jackson. Canadians deserve better from their tax dollars than yet another soft-rock, easy-listening station.
I am 30 and when CBC One was changed, I found myself listening to Two more. Now where will I go for afternoons of intelligent, dynamic music and information?
CBC has such mediocre programming now. I find I tune into US PBS and commercial serious music stations rather than listen to the dribble from Canadas once great radio service.
I greatly miss the presentations of Canadas many fine musical organizations and orchestras across the country. This country has lost something so wonderful to a commercial agenda. Shame on the current president for ruining Canadas voice.
This is a further dumbing down of Canadian society. Serious music is not an elitist venture but for every soul wanting to discover more than the commercial norm. CBC is Canada's gateway to enlightenment, don't shut the door!
