I hope CBC with continue to enrich Canadian lives with its quality programming rather than diminish all of us by lowering the bar. Change with meaning is fine, but make it something we can value PLEASE!
Of all the bone-headed decisions made by CBC recently, this one takes the cake. Radio 2 is (was) one of the greatest cultural treasures in Canada, but now, sadly, it is being summarily destroyed by a bunch of bureaucrats.
CBC Radio 2 is one of the few places where one can hear excellent classical music and informative programs about classical music. To remove so many classical music programs destroys an important mission of the CBC. We do not need replication of easy listening/jazz programming readily available elsewhere. I deplore recent changes in CBC Radio 2 and will soon have no reason whatsoever to listen to its broadcasting
I feel very sad about the demise of classical music on Radio 2. Even now, the so-called classical programmes, play mainly pop and jazz. When I moved to Toronto in 1974 from New York, I was glad to see that I would be able to listen to good music on the radio. Now there's very little left here, while NY stil has WQXR, WNYC and public broadcasting. I resent paying taxes to support pop music.
Please appreciate that for many listeners Radio 2 is their primary access to contemporary music composed in the classical tradition as well as composition in the classical canon. DUMBING DOWN to Canadians is not what the CBC was created to do
Why would you take Disc Drive off the air - and some other proograms that are so successful - jazz, to name just one. Also it would be interesting to know why some of these new programmes are being aired. Some of them sound like children having just found an unattended number of instruments (drums in particular), and are really having fun with them - no rhythm, no sense.I know it's being said often enough - it's the older generation - they need to move with the times! Well, then, why is it that yesterday's music with its rhythms and swing remains so popular - and so much classical music right alkong with it!!For Goodness Sake, Please use some Sound Sense!!
CBC has gone from the station my radios never moved from to being removed from my presets entirely. They have taken the best radio and replaced it with utter rubbish. What else is in the
Why should we support a tax payer funded radio station that plays the same stuff as any commercial station? With every change in the last year we have listened less. The latest round will mean CBC will be replaced by our CD collection.
I have been an avid listener of Rick Phillips, Studio Sparks and Disc Drive for a number of years. I am very disappointed with the decision to remove them. If you want to introduce new programming why not reduce some of the standard programming by a half hour giving you a new time slot to play with.
What is the CBC thinking...or are they thinking? I propose eliminating them altogether...maybe then government funds can be redirected to a radio station that promotes the arts as oppose to smashing it to pieces! What will happen to our youth...our youth interested in art...their voices will not be heard! Transfer funds to 96.3! Moses rules!
I have recently discovered radio 2, in part because radio one seems to have more and more listener involving programs (cost saving?) and I find most of them unsatisfactory. The programs on radio 2 are wonderful in the main, and if they are diluted where else have I to go. I think then the competition will be U.S. stations that play classical music. Why when we have created the CBC radio something envied by people of many countries are we slowly devaluing it?
This program is also extremely important to University Music majors! I'm a Fine Arts major, as well as one of my best friends majoring in Music at Western Ontario and this news is very troubling to their department. Thank you.
As a faithful CBC 2 listener, I am gravely disappointed to be deprived of a reliable focus on classical music. It is precisely to listen to classical music that I rely on CBC- there are lots of stations playing the stuff I don't want to hear. Please, change your mind!
Thanks goodness for the voices of reason. I am so disappointed with the CBC right now. I listen to the station for the very reason that it is dedicated to classical music. I can get all the other stuff easily thank you and i do not need another jazz, alternative, easy listening channel.
I deplore the dumbing down of CBC2, and insist that taxpayers be consulted before yet another CBC station be subjected to the current mania for removing the programming that the listeners want.
I am a longtime and enthusiastic listener of Radio 2 and find the current classical programming the only alternative in an otherwise dreary line-up of popular and ubiquitous music.
Simply put I do not agree with the programming direction that you are taking the CBC. As a taxpayer who pays your salary, I respectfully demand that, we the majority, be heard. There can be no doubt that the majority of the current Radio 2 listenership is opposed to your plans. Please revisit this issue.
I hardly think CBC will win any new listeners with these changes in programing. The only thing this will accomplish is to drive away listeners who enjoy classical music and thought provoking conversation. I think it is pretty sad that stations such as NPR provide the types of programming that CBC used to and SHOULD be providing.
I am a big fan of Both Tom Allen and of Jurgen Goth and find both shows informative and entertaining. The proposed changes will only force me to PBS for the misic that I want to hear.
The CBC was the best thing Canada had to offer ALL its citizens. Now you have even taken that from us and are treating us like retards to boot. Shame on you for not understanding our commun love for classical music from coast to coast.
We miss the excellent daytime evening broadcasts, and are not happy about the prospect of loosing the morning classical music shows. As we both work and do not listen during the day, there will soon be no further reason for us to listen to CBC Radio at all. We strongly urge you to reconsider.
I can't believe that this is actually happening--where do I go for my classical music now? My preschool aged son actually prefers radio 2! It is so short sighted...
CBC continues to create excellent programs, and then cancel them from all levels of broadcast - wether television, radio or satellite. I'd like to see them put their effort into maintaining and support quality programing that represents our collective and varied voices.
This is a vital service for Canadians in an age when literacy of all sorts is at risk. It damages the CBC's reputation as a leader in educational and cultural life.
