Having grown up with the CBC (AM/FM, Radio One and Radio Two since a child (nearly 40 years) I am devestated by the erosion of what has been for me the cornerstone of Canadian media in my household. As a musician I feel personally offended that classical music is being slowly eliminated from public broadcasting and replaced with commercial music which makes the CBC little different from other broadcasters. Why waste our tax payer dollars on this? If this continues, we may as well just fold the CBC now and spend our tax dollars on other things. What a sad sad state of affairs. We can only hope someone in management is listening and cares about music, arts culture and having a unique medium for these in Canada. Please please please listen to your LISTENERS. Sincerely, Isaac Bull, New Westminster BC
The first music I ever remember hearing came to me from Disc Drive. I was probably 3. Ever since I can remember I have been listening to that programme. It was essentially the only reason to tune in. The thought of it simply being erased is unthinkable; sickening. As a classically trained musician I find all of this appalling. If Gothe disappears from the radio waves, I'll never find my dial on 106.5 ever again.
The change that the cbc is suggesting is one of the most absurd things that I have heard in my lifetime. growing up CBC radio two was the station that we listened to because it was different and it gave us something that we couldn't find elsewhere. Now cbc is just going to be the same as all of the 50 stations that play the same songs. CBC radio two is part of Canada, and this change is taking away some of the most important things that distinguish us as Canadians.
I am 28 and CBC Radio 2 is my default station. I would mourn these changes as a huge loss of connection between CBC and its listeners. And my dial default would change, of course.
Will we now have to tune in to one of the two classical stations in Seattle to hear decent music in Canada? Shame on BC for dumbing down Canadian Radio
I am appalled by the decisions [ without consultation with the people CBC2 is supposed to serve ]CBC have made to reduce the broadcasting of Classical music AND the discussions and commentary that enhance , inform and delight the listening audience. Who is this new and dumbed down programming supposed to serve? Who will benefit? What impact will this have on the arts community across Canada...well no need to ask that, I guess. This is going to be devastating to so many people, especially those loyal listeners who live far from 'cultural centres' in this country and are now totally cut off from classical music.
CBC Radio 2 is one of the best stations on the radio, just as is, and even with the recent changes. The programming that was already cut is sorely missed. This station is unique in the world of radio programming, and there is nothing to replace it in most of Canada. Please do not cut any more classical programs and bring back the classical programming and Arts Report that were already cut.
Our society (Canada, influenced strongly by the USA)has for some time supported the glorification of stupidity. Now the fruits of this are being seen at the management level of the CBC. Stop the rot!
Somewhat to my surprise, I have found that CBC's classical music and arts programming has been even more appreciated in rural area where I have practiced, where it is often the only source of such programming, than it is in urban areas.
I am simply horrified by the news. I have always been a strong advocate of the CBC, seeing it as a worthy alternative to the BBC programmes which I enjoyed as a child and a young man. I have witnessed the enormous growth and development of cultural institutions of al kinds in this country over the past forty years, and I recognize the crucial role that the CBC has played in their development. I have marveled at the skill of knowledgeable hosts who have 'popularized' classical music by means of their informal 'chatty' approaches to the subjects in hand. I have heard stimulating conversations with some of the finest artistes in the world - AND NOW WE HAVE THIS. Something should be done, for sure!!!!!
The only radio channel where a canadian can listen to decent music is Radio 2 and Espace musique. Please think of us who are not rock and roll heads and need the comfort of classical music.
CBC's cuts to its classical music programming, and planned further cuts, are for no valid reason. CBC Radio 2 is almost the sole source of classical music braodcasting in Canada. Its programming has contributed to music education and support for Canadian amateur and professional music organizations. It has also provided profound and satisfying listening. It is being replaced by programming for which there is a very limited or imaginary audience. CBC should restore quality programming to Radio 2.
I will be devastated when Music and Company goes off the air. Even in Toronto, it's difficult to find intelligent, insightful, and entertaining commentary along with interesting classical and jazz music.
We retired from Toronto to an island in the Bay of Fundy and have listened to CBC, mostly Radio 2, even more than we did in Ontario. If Tom Allen is no longer able to keep us informed about the Vultures, as well as teach us about the lives and loves of composers, we may have to revert full time to Maine Public Radio.
This is a retrograde move and a sad day. I will now be turning my radio OFF, as there will be nothing to listen to, except WNED when in range. I will not be tuning in to CBC via the web, as there's no time in my day to be surfing for classical music concerts, so I will not see all the planned new advertising. I use my computer for other purposes. Driving to and from work with classical programming on CBC 2 is wonderful for open roads and soothing in traffic jams, or has been up to now. You can keep the headbanging clangor or mind-numbing easy-listening. What on earth are management thinking?
CBC radio is not a buffet but a restaurant with a menu. Please ensure that the programming nurtures new tastes in the public and challenges current trends.
Shades of Tommy Hunter! This seems to me to be another instance of middle-management, middle-Canada, middle-brow bureaucrats programming for their friends in Toronto. Once they've made themselves irrelevant to us who will be there to support them when some right-wing government decides to dismantle the CBC?
Canada's cultural community needs the CBC to remain its unifying voice, and define Canada's artistic and music community. Canada's composers and musicians need the CBC's support.
CBC radio 100.5 is the only Classical Radio station available in our area. It is here I have enjoyed listening to and learning about new Canadian artists. I also enjoyed the erudite commantary on selected l pieces and composers.
I have been listening to CBC Radio 2 for many years. I cannot believe the breath-taking stupidity and short-sightedness demonstrated by those who have made the decision to remove most classical programming from the schedule. This decisions must be reversed.
