I can't believe that CBC has done this. Radio 2 is the only classical music station in the Grey Bruce area, and we waited years for this programming to be available. There is enough 'light music' out there to sink a ship. Please restore the programming and music we want to hear.
I am appalled that a few powerful CBC moguls are being allowed to destroy Canada's most treasured and unique cultural institution. Thirty years ago, when I lived in Sudbury, Ontario, English teachers in nearby Espanola were resorting to using 'Valley of the Dolls' as a text in order to get students to read anything at all. Such deliberate dumbing-down is unconscionable .The writing is on the wall for the CBC- who needs more of the mind and soul-destroying garbage that is already widely disseminated on the pulp radio channels? We need to take back our CBC . Perhaps we need a referendum on this issue!
My husband and I have been frequent listeners to Radio 2 for years, but recent program changes have caused us to turn it off. Surely we should aim for the highest not the lowest common denominator.
CBC Radio 2 is the first button on the dial in my car and the best to sooth my toddler when he's upset. Please don't proceed with these plans. We don't need more of what other people are doing!
Please restore the wonderful programming that at one time WAS CBC Radio 2. You are alienating your faithful listeners by offering programming that already exists on many other stations. Please halt this slap in the face to those of us who love the CBC and who consider it the golden thread that holds this country together, from sea to sea to shining sea - HALF AN HOUR LATER IN NEWFOUNDLAND!!!
I listen to CBC Radio 2 all day every day, but not in the evening any more - because you stopped playing classical...Andrea Rituski's show from Wiinnipeg was THE BEST at night...PLEASE don't decimate and ruin any further, or I will go to CD's and not listen to you at all!!
I live in rural Ontario so there are only limited opportunities for me to attend classical music concerts or arts programs. Radio 2's classical music and arts programming are stimulating and informative. I urge the CBC to reconsider this decision. So many other stations already offer lite jazz and pop. We need a station that offers something more challenging.
I am a music student in Waterloo. CBC is the only station which my radio picks up that actually plays classical music. It would be a shame for the programming to be cancelled.
CBC radio has been played in our home for over 60 years. Since I was a young girl in rural Manitoba the radio was my first introduction to Classical Music. I went on to graduate with a music degree and taught music in schools until U retired. Music is still vital in my life and I sing in Elektra Women's Choir as well as En Chor a new Vancouver choir. I cannot imagine not listening to fine music ans hearing favorite programs such as
It's not just an aging population that demands that we retain the best classical music broadcasting -- it's also the many young people for whom this is often the only means of hearing great Canadian artists and others perform the finest music our culture can produce.
I have listened to Radio 2 since it's inception. I cannot imagine my life without this music and the wonderful people who present it. Please restore this important facet in my life and in the lives of many others. Where else can we turn to for this necessity?
DONT lose the classical music and the news, we have enough other boring stations! i love the new music hour. i now live in the US, and listen by internet; dont kill the best part of CBC!
I think that it is a terrible idea to change the programming further. I have a feeling that instead of gaining an audience they will loose more audience because no one not listening to the radio will hear about the changes, and the people that are listening will stop listening because of the changes!!!!!!
It often seems that CBC has lost contact with its audience, and forgets that its mandate has nothing to do with numbers but everything to do with excellence in its offerings in all spheres.
We loved CBC 2 before the changes and sorely miss the classical music. There ought to be at least one place on the dial where we can hear classical music!
Canadians already lost a large portion of the varied programming the CBC once offered when Brave New Waves was cancelled. Losing classical programming on CBC2 will only continue the shameful homogenization of a once unique national institution that made me proud to be a Canadian.
It appears that not only the evening time slots, but all of the daytime programming are getting away from classical music. I find this very distressing.
The proposed changes at Radio 2 are a retrograde step of gigantic proportions. Backwards to mediocrity is the only apt description. The quality of my life would be immeasurably downgraded.
In many parts of Canada, CBC offers the only source of classical music. Every other station on the dial plays the sort of music CBC now plans to offer. This decision must be justified PUBLICLY. CBC is a public organization. We the taxpayers/shareholders, have a right to input and a complete explanation of changes planned.
We have enough radio stations in Canada that play Pop music. We have only the CBC to expose us to classical music, traditional and contemporary. Please reconsider the plans to change the programming.
I agree 100% and urge the management at CBC Radio 2 to listen to its loyal listeners, especially those in rural and small town Canada, where the CBC is the only alternative to rock, easy listening, jazz.
I have been appalled at the changes to programming on Radio 2. My radios were always set to CBC Radio2 but now I can only listen during the day. Shame!!
As a current student of music and as a future Canadian musician, I am of the opinion that the CBC needs to rethink how these cancellations will affect future generations of aspiring Classical musicians.
I think that the board of CBC has a responsibility to ensure that the quality of programming is maintained. Canada has a need for leading edge programmes. Elevator music is ubiquitous--cbc had no need to supply more of it. Edward Schmitt
Canada has a fine and thriving musical community. It supports more opera companies and symphony orchestras that other jurisdictions it's size in the world. Part of the reason is the excellent support of classical music that has been provided by the CBC. It would be a shame to reduce that support. Yes, Canada is a country with a wide and eclectic musical heritage that also needs to be supported but there are other avenues that provide listening for those types of music. Alternatively, start an eclectic station - CBC Radio 3. Leave 2 alone!
CBC Radio 2 is an integral part of canadian musical life. To cut it back is a short-sighted and dangerous blow to the health of classical music in Canada.
If CBC2 has the aim of appealing only to mass audience then it might as well be commercial. CBC2 has a special place in Canada in providing quality programming. I particularly want the classical music content to be retained, and would like the news and weather to be expanded to its previous length.
I love AfterHours jazz and waking up to classical music. I listen to radio2 during the day to relax too. It's a great thing; please keep it on the air!
Please reinstate the classical music of CBC Radio 2, rather than the 'easy listening' which does not provide any cultural stimulation or promote discerning listening.
