I am horrified that someone at the cbc has decided to cut back on the wonderful classical music which I have greatly enjoyed for many years. I would like to know who is responsible for this decision. I would like names and if it is the government I would like to know. What gives them the right to do this without public consultation. There is a tremendous following for this classical music and jazz. They are trying to appeal to a broader base of listeners who are already served by countless other stations. They will lose thousands and thousands of loyal cbc fans. We are all devastated at losing this wonderfully enjoyable and educational programming. PLEASE, PLEASE, DON'T DO IT.
Who is slowly destroying CBC? For decades I was a devoted listener to the unique, informative and enjoyable programs on CBC but now there is less and less reason to turn on the radio. Please restore your quality programs and don't even think of discontinuing ChoralConcert!
I am one of many, many who listen to CBC because of the classical music. If only the elite listen, think just how many of us are now the elite! Please rethink this decision. Those who cannot afford to go to concerts spend a lot of time listening to your station. We should not be deprived of that pleasure!!
Tom Allen's show (Music and Company) is what makes my one hour drive to work in the morning a pleasant one. Please don't take that away. The man is witty and humorous and has the best taste in classical music.
I find it iniquitous that what was previously a fine broadcasting outlet for excellent music and commentary, such as the Studio Sparks and Sound Advice programmes, has now been downgraded to provide little that is worthy of the bother of listening. Shame, CBC, shame!
CBC Radio 2 has been so important to me to be able to hear classical music I can't hear anywhere else. Please don't dumb down your network and create yet even more inane commercial programs like all the others. You've always had such high standards--what has happened to them?
I truly believe Canadians rely on CBC Radio 2 for classical music programming! There are plenty of radio stations offering commercial music, we don’t need any more. We need what CBC has always offered its dedicated listeners: intelligent, interesting, different, thought-provoking arts programming in the classical vein. CBC, please reconsider the changes you are making, restore our faith in public broadcasting, and have confidence in offering that which is not mainstream – classical music.
I feel offended and outraged to think that these choices have been made! CBC radio programing in the past has been at the musical core for me and many of my freinds!
As a young business professional that is also active in the arts, I am sorely disappointed in the recent changes to the CBC. I have been an avid listener to Radio 2 especially, and think this is a huge step backwards. In my opinion, classical music has the unique ability to transcend the boundaries of age, race, etc. and it is an integral part of our collective culture. I sincerely hope that CBC will revisit their decision.
It is difficult enough to access Radio 2 here in the hinterlands, (I live in kaslo, B.C.) - though I pay for it just the same - but it is too important to nibble into ruinous bits.
CBC radio was something I was just getting used to and a wonderful way to provide culture and music that will last a LIFETIME for all generations! I enjoy waking up to beautiful music rather than other stations, painful to the ear...
For those of us who are active advocates and educators in/for the arts this proposed action is diametrically opposed to all the meaningful work and struggles we have encountered. If CBC has no respect for history, culture, creativity, then how can we expect Gen X'ers and Y'ers to place any kind of value on anything other than mainstream pop/rock (as primarily dictated by American broadcasts) schlock television, and their computer games. This is a blow to Canadian society. Surely someone has thought of some inventive measures to bring CBC
I don't know who these people are who keep coming up with these hair brained ideas of cutting culture from our lives. Don't you realize that culture is the backbone of a people. CBC, in my view, is one of the great protectors of culture in this countryof ours called CANADA.
The CBC has no right to cancel these shows without input from its listeners. As taxpayers, we are the ones paying for this service. CBC 2 is the only decent radio station to offer classical music. Think the decision over again and consider the listeners' point of view.
I have been a listener to the CBC for over 40 years. It has been a model of excellence in discussion and analysis of public affairs, in examination of cultural and intellectual pursuits, and in providing listening entertainment of a very high standard. I am saddened to see the recent deliberate squandering of this resource. Programming lately has been increasingly banal, much resembling mundane commercial radio. I often turn off the radio in frustration.
Please rethink this decision. It was one place on the radio dial in Canada where I could find calm tranquility in the evening. Must I be obliged to listen to an out of country station through my computer? Makes little sense to me!
As an enthusiastic listener and promoter of CBC Radio for the past 45 years, I am sad to admit that CBC has lost my affections; I too have defected south of the border to NPR.
The only thing that has always made the CBC DIFFERENT from commercial radio and WORTHWHILE has been its long history of offering high quality music of lasting value. Last year it was Music for a While, now it's Sound Advice, soon it will be Saturday Afternoon at the Opera and probably Studio Sparks that will be taken away from us. As loyal DAILY listeners for over 30 years, we are devastated. Better shut it down altogether, since it's becoming irrelevant. WHY are they doing this to us??
I totally agree with the above petition. The CBC Radio 2 programming has become so changed, that I have begun listening almost exclusively to the American NPR station over the internet! Hopefully this will soon be rectified!
Canada had the best radio;not anymore.People from all over loved the CBC.Now our national radio will be like all the rest.Again a loss of our once proud identity
The CBC should be receiving more funding from the Federal Government not less. It is an important national institution that is helping to build our country.
