Please do not take away any of the classical music programming from CBC. CBC Radio 2 must stay with Two New Hours and the other great programmes.Mike Cumberland
This is such a short-sighted move. For people who didn't grow up playing or listening to classical music, the CBC's evening programs were a great way to develop one's musical knowledge and taste. It was also great exposure to so much music we don't hear elsewhere. Where else are Canadians (especially outside Toronto) supposed to go?
Dump the political hacks and 13 vice-presidents who give us the same pap which is available on other stations. Bring back the ilk of Danielle Charbonneau
Canada is in BIG TROUBLE and we need all the support we can get!BASICALLY, the country's classical radio station is going to be DESTROYED and they want to DISMANTLE the CBC National Radio Orchestra, North America's only broadcasting orchestra. This is not just a hit on classical music in Canada, it's a MAJOR HIT ON CLASSICAL MUSIC, PERIOD.Whether you are Canadian or not, please support us in our fight against this craziness! INFORM YOURSELF! JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUPS: Save the CBC Radio Orchestra!Save Classical Music at the CBC
If these cchanges go through, I am going to boycott the entire CBC, TV and all. Even news can be got somewhere else! I also see in these measures an overall attempt to dumb down the country. After all, classical music requires attention and some knowledge (yes, this may be elitist, and so be it!) All the other music is available everywhere else, at nauseam, swamping us.
CBC was the only location on radio where a vehicle was provided for exposure to contemporary classical music. It's service to the public as well as to those of us involved in the music industry was invaluable. Please revisit this decision.
I really am outraged by this decision. If the government cannot support this sort of endevour, what can it do? As an upper bracket tax payer I bitterly resent not having some part of my taxes go to something I can genuinely support.
Two New Hours has long been an important outlet for new creative work in this country. In fact it has been one of the few vehicles whereby we can experience the rich, interesting, important and provocative work that is being done in this field.
There is no reason for the CBC to become like all the other broadcasters. There are already enough of them! The nation sorely needs the serious music broadcasts of the old CBC. Please reinstate it!
Classical music is one of the (increasingly few) reasons i support the CBC. At some point soon, i will be joining those arguing for a big cut in your subsidy. If you sound like commercial radio, then be financed like it...
The CBC cut backs, I believe are due to the Republican like Conservative government we are being forced to endure. I suspect that they do not care about culture as it can't throw people in jail or shoot foreigners in a foreign country. I was growing up when Trudeau was leader and Canada decided to venture into the world of Classical music though not sure it could pull it off. It did and the CBC became a world class radio station and a showcase for Classical Canadian music talent. The powers that be, in a matter of a year have destroyed all this work - shame on you . I have switched to WQXR - the Classical Radio station of the New York Times which I can listen to over the internet. This means that now my news is American, the Classical music I am being
I imagine the cuts to classical music is in an effort to appeal to a younger audience. How are the younger audience to hear music that lasts forever if it is taken off the air. And what about the number of folk who are young at heart and will greatly miss hearing the classics. I for one have switched to an American station!
I am disgusted with the attitude of the directors of CBC at deciding to totally change the broadcast profile of Radio2 in order to become more 'mainstream'.Shame on everyone at Fort Dork!
Classical music is a treasure of the world. As an international student, I am very glad that Canada has a big audience of it and rich classical music culture. Please help preserve these and continue your good work!
The proposed changes to the afternoon programming are most detrimental to Radio 2. If classical music is dispensed with why bother listening to the CBC. Classical music to my thinking was always the reason to tune into Radio 2
As a former professional Opera Singer, and now a teacher at Western University, I LOVE classical music. I now live in an area where CBC2 is the ONLY classical station I recieive and will be lost without it.
To move to mid-brow music is absolutely appalling. The CBC should be about providing the audience with programming they do not get elsewhere: classical music is at the heart of western civilization.
SHAME ON THE CBC!How can a publicly funded institution destroy without public input what you have formerly, and for over 30 years promoted? Don't you realize how long it takes to build a functional cultural network, especially an orchestra - taking into account how little it takes to destroy such cultural achievements in just a few weeks? Asking more directly, as a Canadian tax payer and cultural advocate: has any of the CBC decision makers ever informed themselves about the devastating effects of closure of orchestras on local and regional cultural fabric? For example, the rapid closure of Germany's 100's of orchestras following the reunification? Or to put it in simple terms: what are you serving us, the listeners, as a substitute meal, every day, 7 days a week?Christoph Both, M.Ed., M.Mus., Ph.D.Full Professor of MusicFaculty, School of MusicAcadia University
Tom Allen's morning show and Robert Harris' I Hear Music are two of the best things being broadcast. I would be so disappointed if they were cut. Please keep all of your classical programming.
The CBC was created to broadcast Canadian culture and programmes of interest to Canadians as a whole, and to resist the encroachment of American stations onto the Canadian airwaves. In recent only the recent past, what has CBC delivered? --Morningside // Between the Covers // Basic Black // Dead Dog Cafe // The Great Eastern (SADLY missed!) and on and on. I could put CBC on at 8:00 AM on a Saturday and easily listen, engaged the whole time, till midnight. Now? It's a wasteland -- and a disgrace.
Please don't turn my favourite radio station into one more boring, mainstream station. You won't increase your listener base because there are better choices for that now available. And you will lose those of us who value the excellent programming of the past.
