In its efforts to represent the entire country in boring ways and to be 'youthful' and 'cool', i.e., chopping classical music right and left, CBC is losing everyone! And the plan to end its Radio Orchestra makes it clear that the CBC has a vendetta against classical music, rather than using the medium of radio to promote meaningful culture.
I strongly support the CBC, Canada's publically funded radio station. To lose its quality music programs, including the music of the CBC orchestra, will be to lose Canada's soul.
If the changes already made to Radio 2 are any indication, all we will get are more music never to be remembered for more than 15 minutes by obscure -and rightly so- artists or by better known artists already available from many sources. CBC needs to dare to be different not try to be the same.Dave.
All Canadian artists who have signed the newspaper ads touting the wonder of being on CBC, and having new vistas of music opened to the public are having the wool pulled over their eyes. There are many many private broadcasters who play these artists regularly. Why is CBC stuck on chasing a market that doesn't want it? Why not grow the market you have by partnering with classical music presenters and touring companies who are breaking new markets monthly? This is truly short-sighted, blinkered thinking that falls far short of vision.
We do enjoy, or did, the 6 p.m. news, why change stations just for this. More Classical music please, get rid of the jazz after dinner, we just switch the radio off now. Tks.
As a long-time listener to CBC Radio 2, I feel the changes have made it impossible to learn about what is going on culturally in this country and abroad. I feel the changes have been made to compete with radio stations in larger cities. If the CBC is a publicly funded organization, why, then are they competing?? Let's leave the bar scene behind and venture back to the concert hall.
The recent damage to (and outright destruction of) all that makes the CBC worth listening to is deplorable. Fire and cut those responsible for destroying what took generations of visionary Canadians to build!
It is inconceivable to me that the CBC would want to destroy the only publicly owned classical music station. Do they really think that people who choose to listen to the CBC will continue to do so when the music is replaced by contemporary music which is already over-represented on many other stations. It will not be easy to win new listeners, as they can hear the same music from many other sources. I am disturbed at the level of disrespect the CBC is showing its current loyal listeners, but I don't imagine that will be a problem in the future.
Please do not continue to cancel Classical music shows on CBC Radio2. I tune in everyday to Tom Allen's show in the morning and it would be greatly missed by many.
In today's world it is increasingly important to maintain a connection with our roots - this is accomplished through the arts and is vital to maintain a forum for celebration of the accomplishments of our artists from classical music to new music.
Please do not get rid of the classical programming and the CBC orchestra. If the CBC does not champion classical/orchestral music who will? We are not thoroughly Americanized yet, are we?
The provincial cuts to the Arts, plus all the federal cuts means that Canadians start to feel that the only thing worth supporting is sports. The Arts should have their place, rightly, and the CBCRadio 1 and II seem to most individuals to be the only entities devoted to playing classical music and informing Canadians about Fine Arts. Please keep this most important resource fully and properly funded!
My complaints on CBC cutbacks started a year ago, with its completely blind reduction of late night jazz programming in favour of what is now being broadcast. I have continued to observe a steady erosion of proven music programs. This is disgraceful.
I've been listening to CBC Radio since my early 20's and consider that it has contributed greatly to my music education. I've stopped listening to CBC Radio 2 and occasionally listen to Radio 1 but don't find it entirely satisfactory. What a pity that CBC doesn't listen to its audiences. Thanks
The only reason for me to listen to CBC is its quality classical programming. I'm especially upset with Sound Advice being cancelled. Such a brilliant program! Why cancel what works?
What's happening to CBC this since I was a child this was the ONLY station I lstened to. Now I often listen to CFMX for fantastic classical programming.
Come on, CBC. Get your balls back and take the lead. That is what we expect and demand of our publicly supported/ authorized national broadcaster. Pack in the pop papp and strive to excel. Nothing less!!!!
CBC was once an appealing mix of classical music and informative commentary about such music. As these aspects are being eroded I turn the radio off more and more frequently. Please restore and maintain the classical programming as well as the CBC Radio Orchestra!
