It is esssential that the CBC should provide the kind of cultural broadcasting that is not available on commercial programs -- classical music (including contemporary or New Music), drama and serious talks. It is a waste of taxpayer money to duplicate what is already available on commercial channels. I also think it is extremely important that classical music/drama/talks should be available all day, not just at a few selected times. People whose only source of entertainment is radio (e.g. seniors in nursing homes) should not be forced to listen to programs designed for a much younger demographic.
CBC is gradually losing any sense of the nature of its audience. When you are finally like all other commercial channels then the politicians of the right will do away with CBC as unrepresentative and money losing.
There are very few opportunities to listen and learn about classical music on the radio. I find the CBC's decision to limit broadcasts of classical music to the midday hours during weekdays only to be unconcsionable.
A day without Tom Allen, Mozart, Eric Freisen or Jurgen Gothe? And to be told by the likes of Stursberg that there is Canadian music I should be listening to? Did you know that CBC management is paternalistic in addition to stupid? No: Radio Two cannot go commercial, pop and trendy. It is not an elitist matter; it is a question of not limiting my listening options with my own tax dollars.
We seem to be inundated with jazz - it seemingly has to be included in every music programme now. As for the early evening on Radio 2 - please bring back the gentle classical programme hosted by Danielle and the late evening That Time of the Night hosted by Andrea. I do not like the type of programming you are presenting in those two time spots. This is just the start of my rant about the mindless stuff you are throwing at us. Wake up whomever is deciding these changes.
Don't do it! The changes that took place a year or so ago were bad enough. If the next batch continues the trend we will simply stop listening during the evenings and resort to CD collection
I am extremely concerned with the cavalier way these and other changes have been made--it seems that a small group has highjacked the programming of our public broadcaster.
Truly, CBC is being eviscerated. YOu forget your role as mentors to the young people you want to court. My son, who is 27, began two years ago to listen to Ideas. Would you have him hanging out with internet options to find intelligent and provocative (and where else can he find Canadian?) programming. Shame on you for your lack of vision!
I agree with the petition. Radio 2 should be unique, and go beyond the surface in music. Classical and modern, but considered music, worth listening to and not just having on in the background.
I used to listen to Radio 2 for about 90% of my waking time. It is now down to about 30% and will go lower with the unfortunate changes planned. I now listen more to other stations and to my CDs.B. Hodkin
Radio 2 is the only source of classical music on the air except for that strange item 96.3 FM of Moses Znaimer that features mechanically presented classical music interspersed with commercials. So, when Radio 2 finishes its revisions, fans of classical music will be forced to leave our computers turned to Otto's Streaming Baroque, an equally mindless form of presentation of continuous Baroque by the hour (with delayed titles) and commercials on the half-hour.As for the evening stuff, Katie Malloch isn't a bad Tonic sometimes, but there's such a lack of good classical in the evenings, it's sad.
This is an issue of sovereignty. The CBC is eliminating the rdio orchestra which has been the most effective platform for presentation of music of Canada's composers. This follows on their actions last year in destroying the CBC record label and three years ago stopping studio recordings by this world-renowned orchestra. They have erased culktural memory and suppressed free expression. The message is that Canada should no longer celebrate and export orchestral music by its leading composers so that Canada becomes a neo-colonial power which imports arts and culture. This is an issue about music, Radio Two, public broadcasting but more than that it goes to the heart of what it means to live as a Canadian in a complex modern democracy in the 21st century.
Jennifer commented in the Star that they are redirecting funds from the running of the radio orchestra to facilitate more access to Canadian music in other areas. If our musicians have no place to play and our composers no place to have their works performed...just what exactly will you have available to broadcast? When all the musicians leave for other countries just to find work, where is the CBC going to find Canadian content? Abominable!
Canada needs a classical music station - CBC used to provide this, esp. for those of us living in the Maritimes with no alternative for classical music. All you have to do is listen to
I am not in favour of the scheduled changes to Radio 2 programming. I really enjoy the Classical Music. I am really pleased I also have a Satellite Radio because if this proposal goes ahead I shall not be listening to Radio 2
Losing the current programming on CBC 2 would be a colossal mistake. This radio station has been a wonderful part of our Canadian culture and needs to continue to be so for the next generation!
