CBC Radio has been progressively dumbed down over the past few years. Let's leave well enough alone in the cultural department of Radio Two. The Arts Report and classical music programming have an audience that demands and deserves their excellence.
I am dismayed and very sad to see the direction that the CBC is taking. They have already cancelled some excellent programmes and drastically reduced the amount of classical music being played most especially in the evenings. I would like to know who is making these decisions and based on what research.
I realise that new audiences must be developed but perhaps there could be the courage of conviction that the pursuit of excellence and enquiring minds are something to be proud of in our country. When you are ready for something more than the usual fare on the airwaves here is a top notch opportunity. It is someting I do not mind paying taxes for. The ad in the Globe this past weekend spoke volumes of what is in store. It could have paid for the wages of the Canadian musicians who play in the now doomed CBC orchestra.
I am a lifetime devoted listener to CBC Radio2 and its predecessor, CBM-FM in Montreal. I will be just another disappointed, and disillusioned loistener who will turn elsewhere for my radion entertainment. There is an excellent French language classical music station in Mionttreal that will fill some of the void.I urge you to listen to your listeners. The market for CBC Radio2's programming does not constitute a large majority. However, I had always believed that part of CBC's mandate is to serve the diversity of niche markets. Please fulfill this part of your mandate.
Since one year, I feel guilty doing nothing and not expressing myself on this huge society problem! I am happy to add my voice to thousands and thousands others about the CBC
The programs which are slated for cancellation are exactly the type of programming that our tax money should be supporting. This is the wrong way to go.
Dare I say it? Yes, even my teenaged daughters are VERY TIRED of Jian Ghomeshi and his superficial clones!!!Here's to all those young people that grew up with 'Classical Kids
There is a lovliness and great service as well to hearing art news on Arts Report. We can't go anywhere without crap celebrity news surrounding all entertainments and arts. Please leave it be!!! Also, we need Choral Concert! It is the brightest window on what the human voice and creative composing mind can do. It's astounding what you can hear on that program, especially when they broadcast competitions. Stand your classical ground and don't let us get washed away with the mainstream, dull offerings of the day!!!Roxanne.
ithe only reason i listen to cbc 2 is for the classical music. If i wanted to listen to broken social scene and all the others who were mentioned in your full page ad in the globe i would be listening to commercial radio
These changes, including the dismantling of the CBC Radio Orchestra and the suspension of the SM 5000 label are nothing less than cultural genocide. We cannot stay connected to the best of our classical and contemporary music without an informed and high quality public broadcaster. Calssical music for the masses means that every Canadian regardless of location or economic circumstances can be exposed to enduring musical art.
It is a shame that the CBC would even consider losing such a valuable organization. For me, the place to find good music is the CBC. I see this step as one which supports societies good view that music is a frill in education and society.
I love the classicals its so enriching to all my family my 9 year old daughter studyed by it . Its a very rich cultural part of history ! it is truely a taste of Heaven!
CBC is ignoring it's audience who has faithfully supported it for years across Canada and is losing it's focus by pandering to popular tastes. I now listen to Jazz and another classical station!
I'm a Mum of four small children and we're all dedicated daytime listeners - more classical - less jazz and light pop!!!!And bring back the orchestra!!!!
What more can I say that hasn't been said? When Radio2 stops the classical music, I will stop listening to Radio2. I can't listen from 10 to 2, so that means I won't listen at all. Will that be good for the CBC if I and thousands of others tune out?
I love your classical programming, and am greatly enriched by listening to it as often as I am able. Keep it going. It enhances the cultural diversity of our country.
CBC is not just for an older demographic. My friends and I who are in their thirties love CBC's classical programming. Even my elementary school age students like CBC radio 2! It's the only radio station that I listen to. Don't change!
Until 19 March 2007, my radio, tuned to CBC Radio 2, came on at 7 a.m. and stayed on until at least 10 p.m. Since that date, it goes off at 6 p.m. With the latest changes, I guess it will only be tuned in from 10 till 2. Why bother having a radio?
The CBC has already eliminated almost every form of classical music programming from its TV network. Now that it is doing the same with radio, I am increasingly of the view that perhaps there is no longer any justification for spending public funds on the CBC.
As a Canadian artist, I am disgusted at those who are attempting to water down the classical music offerings of Radio 2. If we are wanting to be viewed as a nation that supports culture, and is indeed developing its own, we need the CBC to be a vehicle for the performing arts. These steps do nothing to promote cultural identity.
