I already listen more to other stations since the 2007 changes. Why can't something worthwhile and of high quality be kept? I am a taxpayer and I say no to these changes. It DOES represent much of Canada. Please don't give away an important voice for many of us.
Unfortunately I had to work today and could not attend the noon time protest in Ottawa. Otherwise i would have been out to add my voice in protest to the decimation of Radio 2 programming. I have long been a listener of Radio 2 and was severely disappointed when the evening classical shows were replaced by jazz. I no longer listen to radio 2 in the evenings. Now it would seem I will be forced to give up my enjoyment of CBC Radio 2 entirely. I am immensely upset that the wishes of loyal supporters are being disregarded. There are many radio stations broadcasting
The changes are a real mistake. Rather ironic, Canadians are going to have to seek out US radio stations if they want to listen to evening classical music. Thank goodness for King FM and PBS.
CBC Radio 2's content deteriorated sharply after March 19, 2007. It will suffer a further major deterioration if these changes are allowed to proceed. Neither is there any justification for killing the CBC Radio Orchestra. If these changes are allowed to stand, CBC2 will only be duplicating popular music that is already readily available through numerous private outlets. There is no need for CBC2 to duplicate their content on the public dime. CBC 2's responsibility, first and foremost, is to preserve classical-music radio programming in Canada. If CBC really wants to run R
I don't know if you are aware but many of your former loyal listeners now enjoy Espace Musique as an alternative—surely this is not in your best interests
This is such a shame. These programs are so wonderful. I'm not against change but why not work into the change gradually if the need it there. To cancel two such popular programs seems to be just too much!
Signing this petition is in addition to objections I raised by emails to the CBC much earlier but which, surprise, surprise, never received any reply. As a taxpayer and public servant I am astounded by the arrogance of the CBC in all of this.
The attempt by CBC Radio 2 to appeal to a wider and larger audience by playing less classical music and more popular music will have, in my opinion, the opposite effect. The unpredictable nature of current programming, where one may hear a Mozart symphony followed by a pop tune by Alanis Morisset is an example of trying to be all things to all people, and in the end, satisfying no one. This situation will decidedly get worse as knowledgeable classical music hosts such as Eric Friesen and Jurgen Gothe will be moved to off peak listening hours, or, as in the case of Rick Phillips, let go entirely . I used to enjoy listening to classical music broadcast on the CBC. Now I mostly listen to my own recordings.
Your programming changesare driving me to othersources of Classical Music. This change in your policyis not well thought out and, in my opinion, willlead to the eventualtermination of Radio 2.You have lost me, and the support I have always given CBC radioWithout doubt many other loyal listenerswill be tuning out.Adios Radio 2
I have already submitted a comment about the absurdity of this move to take away our Radio 2 classics.Restore CBC Radio Two! It deserves to be the unique and wonderful station it can continue to be. Don't dunb us down!Restore CBC Radio Two!
I was taken completely by surprise to find out that CBC Radio Orchestra in Vancouver was going to be disbanded. Why did the CBC not make this a more important issues in the everyday lives of Canadians before it got to this point? There are many who support the musical arts and would gladly help out if only they knew.
I have been a radio 2 listener for as long as I can remember. I wake up with it in the morning and listen throughout the day everyday. I believe that the proposed changes will ultimately fail to attract a new audience and will only serve to alienate dedicated listeners and lovers of classical music.
The CBC has made many bone-headed moves over the last few years, only to reverse them when it becomes patently clear that instead of increasing audiences, the opposite happens. This is another one, and should be reversed.
The changes to CBC's Radio Two format have been unbearable. Radio Two was a daily part of our family's lives. We have fourteen year-old twins , a son who plays cello and a daughter who plays violin and a thirteen year-old daughter who plays piano and these kids grew up listening to CBC. Starting with Tom Allen in the morning, to Shelagh Rogers on
I am very concerned with the continued changes to classical music programming that continues to be in the forecast for CBC radio 2. Currently, radio 2 is played all day, stopped in the evening. If this does not remain a classical music program station, radio 2 will become just another annoying radio station. You will have lost my allegiance, my constant listening attention and my interest. I am but one voice of I hope many protesting changes in musical programming! Perhaps the programming powers that be think they can be cavalier in their choices for the public. This decision and those coming is a gross miscalculation. I will miss radio 2; don't assume that many will make your
Radio 2 has brought classical music to the lives of myself and my two young kids. Without it, they would know so much less about the magic and the power of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and so many others. The radio airwaves are filled with generic music, Radio 2 is unique and deserves to remain as is.
CBC has a responsibility to expose Canadians to the great musical heritage that we all share. We can't expect commercial stations to do this. CBC is not living up to this responsibilty.
I have been very saddened by the changes at CBC and am even more distressed to think there could be further huge cuts to classical content. I have listened to Radio 2 almost exclusively for 40 odd years and my quality of life will be severely diminished if these changes are implemented.
Until now, CBC2 was to me a bastion of tasteful programming. I was proud that it stood out against all the other stations that play either pop/hip hop drivel, or selections so varied that one person would be hard-pressed to enjoy an entire hour. I usually have CBC2 on most of the day--as I get ready for school, when I'm studying, when I'm relaxing. I'm not going to go away anytime soon, either. I'm 20! I would have made a lifelong commitment to CBC2, but it isn't committed to me.I'm deeply disappointed in and ashamed of the way CBC2 has chosen to go.
I think music can always find a place, and we should be creating more venues for broadcasting instead of getting rid of shows. Radio 3 should expand off the internet, please :)
I listen to Radio 2 as I can during the day, particularly the classical music programs. I used to listen to Danielle Charboneau at night. I cannot imagine anything that is now being discussed even being coparable, for instance, to the Studio Sparks series with Pinchas Zuckerman. Please reconsider your plan to remove at least 6 hours of classical music programming in favor of stuff that anyone could hear elsewhere if they wanted to do so.Thank you
I believe that Canada needs a classical radio station, and that this is the CBC's Radio 2's mandate. It is arrogant of CBC to make wholesale changes to the programming without consultation of the people who are paying for it - i.e. taxpayers.
CBC is the only station offering classical music such as opera, choral, and instrumental/symphonic. I listen to CBC all day at work. Under what pretext are the change being made? Why make it another station of which we have dozens?
I have been listening to CBC radio 2 since 1965 when I was a very poor student and could not afford to go to classical concerts or buy records. I am very concerned that the CBC is changing their format and canceling the classical programs such as Radio Sparks hosted by Eric Friesen. There are many other stations that carry country, pops and jazz if I choose to listen. I think that the changes are very ill conceived and as a supporter of radio 2 and a tax payer I urge the executive to reconsider the changes that they are proposing. Where else can I listen to classical music on the radio?????
At the moment CBC 2 has excellent ,quality programming. management wants to replace this not only with programming that will not unite the country but is also redundant as it can be found on the internet, ipods, other radio stations[in abundance]You will lose a huge cross country audience and will not gain another. I came from the UK forty years ago and it has taken the CBC some time to reach its present quality. Do NOT pander to people out of touch with the real Canada and throw it all away.
CBC 2 must retain its unique purpose which separates it from other radio stations...that of a presenter of classical music and jazz, both prerecorded and live .There are many other venues for 'lite' music , hence CBC 2 does not need to venture there.Thank you.
The CBC is the only source of classical music in many rural communities. To reduce the amount of classical music is, for these people, a slap in the face. For the rest of us, it also represents a great loss. If I wanted to listen to non-classical music I would tune in to one of the commercial stations. The CBC should not be about ratings, it should be about providing a classical music service that is not available, in most areas, anywhere else. Please reverse your recently announced decision to dilute the classical music content of Radio 2.
Classical music needs to be supported as a part of an important culture, and should not be abandoned. I am a University music student studying classically- please don't take away what little classical music most people are exposed to. Please keep the orchestra as well- people get precious little exposure to live music, and the radio orchestra is a great way for people to be exposed to the power of live music without the price tag
I am saddened by the deliberate movement of the CBC administration to warp Radio 2 into just another outlet for commercial music.Radio 2 has been alone in English Canada in the continuous provision of intelligent music both classical and contemporary. For some reason it appears that those directing our public radio feel we must have change. Quietly axing the CBC Radio Orchestra, a 70 year old institoution is the icing ont their cake,What is their mandate ?Where is their market?Who are they pleasing? It seems the changes are being made in isolation, at the expense of radio 2's many listeners.I hate to admit it but If this goes ahead I will l be obliged to tune to foreign outlets, NPR King FM or Classic fml none of 3whom in my opinion equalled the old CBC Radio 2 of which I have been extremely proud
It is more than just music -- It is a Universal language that unites the country from the East Coast to the West Coast. It is food for the soul. Please keep classical and choir music playing on a regular basis ~ Thanks!
I am very disturbed at the direction CBC is taking. I have always been proud of the intelligent, in depth programming that CBC was known for. I relied on CBC to provide a venue for good classical , jazz and contemporary music programming . If CBC wants to appeal to Generation Y, you can offer late night programmes with innovative/ eccentric pop music, such as Brave New Waves, which worked well. Two New Hours was one of the most innovative so-called classical music programs, which played contemporary art music that you wouldn't hear anywhere else. That is how I educated myself for my work as a music librarian at Simon Fraser University -- listening to Two New Hours. I really miss it. There is no other platform for this types of programme, and I'm happy to see my tax dollars support it. I was also proud to know that we had the last remaining radio orchestra in North America. What does it matter if it serves a small audience? That's what art does -- we shouldn't need to cater to the broadest audience. There are enough venues for general pop music. We need an orchestra to support new young composers and musicians. The only thing I agree with was getting rid of Disc Drive, with Jurgen Goethe. I think he was boring and elitist, and the show was getting stale. But is the best we can do is give more air time to Jian Gomeshi ??
As a fourth-year student of music I can say that there is no other area of music more underrepresented than that of the romantic era and earlier. Please don't cut us off from what we have!
Without our classical music and artful music on CBC R2, We'll be forced to tune to another station, Which usually isn't all that good or contains so-called 'modern' music :P
