In addition the signal quality from CBC has suffered. The station will go silent for many minutes at a time at all hours of the day with no explanation. Perhaps that a blessing.
I found myself tuning my radio to the American National Public radio last week because there is no more classical music to listen to in the evenings after work and the program which has replaced the Ats Tonight is banal and tedious.I can't believe that I am giving up on the CBC.
The new programming on dadio 2 is unbelievably bad. Who wants to listen to tuneless, monotonous yet irritating, jangly music at the end of the day when it is time to relax. I would like to know how big the listening audience is for this type of 'new' music.
Two New Hours and the Arts Report were two of the main reasons that I listened to CBC radio. I used to make an effort to be at the radio when both programmes were on. Now with the programmes no longer on the air, I do not have as much reason to do so.
CBC management’s current policy of inclusion makes no attempt to cultivate and elevate the public taste. On the contrary, it regards the taste of the public as something to flatter and celebrate. This makes it not merely populist, but also philistine.
I have pretty much stopped listening to Radio 2 in the evening now and have switched over to Radio Canada. I will return to Radio 2 when you bring back the classical music.
What a great shame. I sometimes forget and turn on CBC Radio 2 after 6 pm, am reminded of the sad deterioration and move to another station (sometimes CKUA, which is no substitute, but it is at least interesting).
I have been outraged at sneaky manner in which the CBC used public money to change it's progamming. There are enough jazz and junk stations out there. The public broadcasters responsibliblity is to provide an avenue for the highest quaility of music that there is available to the public. The CBC was doing a fine job of this before the changes. Those who are responsible for these changes are working to move the listener to the lowest common denominator not the highest. We can and need to achieve as a society. New music needs to be heard on the CBC, As well as an avenue for musical groups to be featured and heard. I repeat that it is the responsiblity of the public broadcaster to do this.
We have stopped listening to CBC2 in the evenings, except when a classical program occurs at 8:00 p.m.. The loss of Music for a While with Danielle Charbonneau has made us look elsewhere, but how find quality programs like hers?
I am deeply saddened and disappointed by the Radio 2 programming changes. I'm a confirmed CBC Radio 2 listener and supporter and I feel abandoned. In particular, the evening programming has deteriorated at a time when I actually can listen to the radio, because my work day is done.
I am so sad at what has happened to CBC Radio 2. The dumbing down, the inane commentary and the lack of serious news of any kind -- three minutes as opposed to the full broadcast is an insult to listeners. A friend turned my dial to CKUA out of Edmonton. It may just stay there.
The incessant interruptions throughout the day with inane promotions hardly entices one to listen to the programmes offered. I do so miss Danielle Charbonneau's
I listen constantly to Radio Two and was puzzled about missing the Arts Report and the evening music - assumed this was an aberration somehow - I can hardly believe that CBC has made a permanent decision about these programs - what kind of consulting was done to lead to this choice? CBC Two is so precious to me - so important to the country's performers and artists. I am shocked at this kind of ignoring of its mandate and the attempt to replicate what other sources produce - rather than treasure its own distinctiveness as the only radio in the country devoted to serving the interests of Canadian artists. PLEASE reconsider.
I thought I was the only one who had stopped listening to CBC2 in the evenings! What a relief to see this address published in the Globe and Mail.I cannot STAND 'Tonic', or its simpering host.....and as for the 'Canada Live' stuff that follows......It is all such a mish-mash.....As usual, in a misguided bid to please everyone, these changes please no one. CBC2 USED to be uniquie in that no other station that I had access to offered quality music programming....now...just a hodge-podge in an effort to be 'popular'.
I'm not fixated on the old program schedule but sadly, the narrowness of the current music programming just doesn't satisfy me. And with the 6:00 news chopped down, and no Arts Report-- I feel deprived of even even the most basic information. I've basically stopped listening to what had once been my favourite station.
My experience of the changes was a profound sense of loss: of Eleanor Wachtel, of Danielle Charboneau, of Andy Sheppard, of Andrew Craig as national host, of quality and of intelligence. We are deprived of fine classical music and of full news reports. Evening programmes, particularly Laurie Brown are dreadful. This is not a support of Canadian culture, it is a shameful dumbing down.
I still am very unhappy with the changes to Radio 2. Why was the news shortened or cancelled? Just because I enjoy classical music does not mean I have no interest in current events. I also was interested to hear about arts news around Canada. Furthermore I thoroughly enjoyed the evening classical programs and wondered why they were cancelled. Now I turn off the radio in the evening or listen to Radio 1. I would be very glad to have the changes reversed.
Why is CBC management abandoning its loyal audience to chase a mythical youth market. Those same youth wouleventually discover CBC for themselves as we did!
I am equally pleased with the current jazz program Tonic or the previous classical program Music for a While in the early evening slot. But from 8-10 pm, Radio2 is completely unpredictable, and after 10 pm, Radio2 is not listenable at all - please bring back jazz or classical programming for the time when most people are dozing off to sleep - 10 pm to midnight.
I have written numerous letters of protest at the retrogressive format change to Radio Two programming, and will continue to do so. I am appalled that in spite of the thousands of letters of protest in a democratic country where public money is being used to maintain public standards of culture, there has been no response by CBC management in the recognition of public opinion with an amelioration to the format. Classical music listeners have been disenfranchised.
The CBC is no longer a classy radio station. Classical music listeners do not go to bed at 6:00p.m. as the CBC seems to think. It would appear Philistines are in charge.
I am enjoying Tonic, but I appreciate a whole show dedicated to new music and compositions being performed in Canada. i liked the format, the time slot and the interviews.
My enjoyment of CBC Radio 2 has lessened since the changes, especially with the evening programmes. I have no idea what the target audience is - certainly not me.
I am delighted to find I am in good company with many other dissatisfied Canadians over the changes to Radio 2. Bad CBC - you ought to be ashamed of yourself! Excellent programming just wasn't good enough?? I'm annoyed with the morning condensed news reporting and the new evening 'lineup'.
Please bring back classical music in the evenings. Toronto is oversaturated with jazz radio. The only existing classical music radio station in Toronto is commercial.
30 year listener to CBC Stereo/Radio 2 - began as a young cabdriver in my early twenties. Extremely distressed by recent changes and attempt to destroy valuable audience and cultural constituency. Very glad to sign petition. Will forward letter independently to CBC. Bruce Dodds
Bring back Danielle Charbonneau at 6:30, and pure classical programming. After all, do you make jazz fans listen to bits of Mozart or Bach? I doubt it.
