(Halifax Regional School Board)

We are a group of concerned parents who are requesting better services for our children. The current state of services is lacking and there needs to be better support services to support our teachers and other staff within the schools. We know that Speech Language services are in high demand and there are not enough Speech Language Pathologists to currently meet the demand within the school system. With case loads well above what any individual can meet the children are the ones loosing out here. This can cause stress to the SLP's and to students and other staff within the school. Also, other support services are in high demand as well. The lack of Aides to help within the classrooms and a Learning Center Staff are another concern that we would like addressed. We are getting more and more children entering the school system who require services that are just not available. The rate of support staff has not risen with the rate of special children entering into our schools.
You can see how this would be a problem. Not only do the special children loose out, but in turn this is a ripple effect that goes right back into our classrooms. Since we have a fully intergrative system in our schools, our special children still are in the classrooms whether they have support with them or not. Some of these children can not function without being a distraction which in turn effects all children's learning.
When our children reach the school system, they lose all services provided through the department of health and become the responsibility of the School board. They go from getting speech (and other) services on a weekly basis, to monthly and sometimes getting no services in the school. As parents we have the power to let the school board and the department of education know this. Thus, this is why we are sending this petition to you. Please see that we have a great deal of support by the amount of signatures that we have attached for you to review. I trust that this will allow you to see that we need to start fixing a very broken system.

Thank you
Sincerely Choice Words (many concerned parents)
