We, the undersigned are appalled at the brutal killing of Sri Swami Laxmananda Saraswati by assailants who opposed his strong anti conversion and Christian missionary aggression stand.

We demand immediate ban to aggressive and violent Christian missionary activities in Orissa and India which threatens religious harmony and is a threat national security.

We urge investigation into numerous human rights violations and for incitement of hatred by Christian missionaries in tribal areas.

The aggressive proselytization activities which teach hatred, coerce newly converted to go against customs of the land by forcing them to slaughter cows and to eat beef, cut down sacred trees, denigrate Hindu gods, is against the pluralistic and tolerant nature of India. These acts will only further aggravate communal relations. Hence the need for the government to strongly come down Christian aggression in India.

We once demand a complete ban on
christian proselytizing activies which is causing serious problems of harmony between communities. If remain unchecked, we will witness such disturbing events again and again.

Background:-
The sensitive tribal region of Kandhamal Orissa is once again in the news. Violence broke out in Aug-Sep 2008 as as the news of Swami Saraswati Lakshmanananda broke out. It was just eight months back on the eve of Christmas that communal violence between Hindu and Christians in Orissa.

Why has the Kandhamal region been experiencing bouts of violence in recent decades. It began with the arrival of Christian missionaries in the area who found the remote region very conducive to conduct prosetylization amongst the poor tribals. The conversions continued unhindered until the arrival of Swami Laxmanananda who put strenuous efforts to stop conversions and help reconversion to Hinduism as well. If not for his effort Kandhamal would have been another Nagaland in the making where the separatist movement has wrecked havoc in the state.

The aggressive Christian proselytization in Orissa today pitched previously peaceful tribals into warring camps of Christians and non-Christian. This has has vitiated the peace that has existed with various communities for millenia.

Why Orissa
Orissa has been specially targeted because of a huge tribal population. This allows the missionaries to work from the scrutiny of the media and carry our their nefarious activities.

In Kandhamal district, for instance, the Christian population has increased from six per cent in 1971 to 27 per cent in 2001, despite a law enacted by the Orissa Legislature in 1967 to prevent conversion by allurement, coercion, bribery and cheating.

The need to Ban Christian Conversions:-
While genuine conversions of faith, most conversions exploit the poverty and vulnerable position of the tribals. Missionaries come well armed with funds, have deep connections in the media, induce coercion and fraudulent methods of conversion. For example only those who are willing to convert are given the benefits of school, food etc. Hence these are used as bait to engender conversion.

Conversion usually destroy the tribal culture. The Nagaland example vividly shows how the new converts in concert with the church indulge in anti national activities and advocate Nagaland for Christ -- a far cry from the secular and tolerant moorings of India
