We aim to protect fundamental freedoms, to preserve civil liberties and to ensure that human rights are respected.

Dear friend,

“I came to recruit you”, was Harvey Milk’s motto to encourage individuals to fight for their rights.

In the same way, Liberals and Democrats for Europe want to recruit you in the fight to ensure that human rights are respected, to protect fundamental freedoms, to preserve civil liberties - that are at the basis of our democracies in the European Union.

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, created to join together Europe’s liberal and democratic forces in the European Parliament, has as one of its priorities the fight for civil liberties.

Liberals and Democrats are as you know forward-thinking politicians who keep a cool head in difficult situations and who continue to steer their political direction clearly on course. We have launched in many European States key reforms to boost individual freedoms and rights - or we have resisted and opposed illegitimate State intrusions in your personal sphere of individual choice.

In the European Parliament, this important characteristic has contributed to the key role that the Liberals and Democrats have always played in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, notably in defending the rights of European citizens. Above all, one value distinguishes us from the Conservatives and the Social Democrats: we believe in the power of freedom and of the responsibility of the citizens, in all fields.

The twenty Liberal and Democrat members sitting in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, have had their actions based on these ideas of individual freedom. Their important and fundamental contribution to civil liberties can also be found on this website.

In view of the importance of the fight against terrorism and organised crime, data protection, asylum and immigration laws, the protection of minorities, security, civil and fundamental rights and all related issues for the people of Europe, this website provides information on what policies the Liberals and Democrats are making for civil liberties and why.

Without members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats fighting for civil liberties in the EP and in the EU, many things in Europe would now be different. Each and every one of these members is making a contribution to ensure that Europe remembers its values and that freedom remains the yardstick for our communities.
